EYNTK about the new Dyson styling products

Being a regular visitor to the Dyson labs was not on my 2024 bingo card but there I was in June awaiting the reveal of their latest launches for the second time in 5 months. First time around I got to see the Dyson Supersonic Nural before it hit the shelves (spectacular, gimme 14 of 'em right now) and then recently I got a sneak preview of something completely new for the tech brand. When the curtain dropped (ok not an actual curtain but bear with me) on their latest launch, a collection of ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaaahs’ rang out from the clutch of journalists in the room. Dyson was launching their first styling products and we were the first to test them. Here’s everything you need to know.

What are the new Dyson styling products?

There are five products in the range and the split is a pre-styling cream and a post-styling serum. The products will be available from the 27th of August in the UK. The serum is a universal formula but the cream is split into formulas for straight to wavy hair and then curly to coily hair. They are then split again into rich and light conditioning formulas to cover all hair thicknesses. Like with everything Dyson, these styling products are really innovative, conceptually. It wouldn’t be a Dyson launch if they didn’t get nerdy with the formula of their very first styling products, would it?

The hero ingredient in all the formulas is called - shock - Chitosan, a molecule found in the walls of oyster mushrooms. It’s the part of the mushroom that gives it its shape, and in these products, it helps to give the hair a flexible hold.

Dyson Chitosan Pre-Styling Cream

This cream is for prepping your hair pre-heat styling. From what we’ve seen, it works best with the Dyson Airwrap, especially if you’re someone who has previously complained that your Airwrap curls don’t hold (raises hand) then this goes some way to fixing that. It contains conditioning agents to lock down frizz and then a mix of oils and silicones to ramp up the smoothness and shine. For the best results, you pop a pump (or two!) onto towel-dried hair and then heat style.

If you’re wondering how the four variants differ, the rich conditioning formulas contain oils that are slightly more nourishing and traditionally heavier whereas the light conditioning contains lightweight oils to avoid weighing any hair down. So the light conditioning pre-styling for straight to wavy hair is featherlight compared to the rich conditioning for curly to coily hair – are you with me?

Dyson Chitosan Post-Styling Serum

This serum is a finishing product to lock in your style and Dyson recommends it for use after heat- or air-drying hair. It contains hyaluronic acid which made me double-take at the ‘greds because this skincare lover knows that HA attracts moisture to the skin, so I was confused about what it was doing in a serum designed to literally prevent humidity from attacking your hair. But fret not, because the peeps at Dyson say that this inclusion allows the product to act as a kind of invisible shield holding any of that moisture on the surface of your strands without it getting into your hair's cuticle to wreak havoc. Clever.

How much do they cost?

Given the investment in Dyson tools, we weren’t expecting these to be cheap. Each product is £49 and the refills are £44.

Do the Dyson styling products work for all hair types?

In short, yes, they do. I got to see all five be used on models from start to finish and got to try the pre-styling rich conditioning cream for curly to coily hair on my own hair as well as the post-styling serum. I think whether they will be firm favourites for all hair types is another story.

Our review of the Dyson Chitosan range

I really liked the pre-styling rich conditioning cream. I used it on freshly-washed hair and then went in with my Airwrap using the round brush attachment and was impressed with how soft my hair felt once dry. However, next comes my biggest gripe. I then had to add heat protection before I straightened my hair further.

Now, I just want to clarify that most Dyson tools don’t go over 150 degrees Celsius (only the Corrale) and so you could argue that you don’t need heat protection if you are pairing the products with them, but as a girlie that likes to mainly straighten my hair to within an inch of its life, I need that sweet, sweet, guaranteed heat protection for when I whack my straighteners on my coils at 200 degrees. It did annoy me that this wasn’t incorporated into the formula because it would honestly make so much sense. If you're someone that only uses the Airwrap or a low heat, this shouldn't be as much of an issue for you.

Can we give the packaging a moment though? The way these cylinders pump out the product is almost erotic. The neatest pea-sized amount, 0.22ml to be exact, that's the same size Every Damn Time. The magnetic lids are also faff free – snaps for the engineers.

For me, the Post-Styling Serum was a miss, but that’s ok because it’s not for how I choose to style my hair. I think the serum works best for low manipulation styles, for people that are simply enhancing their natural texture whether that is naturally straight or naturally coily, and that's not really me.

Overall, while I don't think these will be shifting my current wash day faves out of the way, I think its

I'm excited to see what the next Dyson product launches will be...
