On the first Monday in May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute hosts its annual fundraiser, an event that reliably attracts a glimmering array of attendees and headline-making fashion. Every year, The Met Gala raises eight-figure sums for the Costume Institute’s charity. With details just released for the 2025 event, here’s everything you need to know.

What’s the theme for the Met Gala 2025?

The 2025 theme delves into the sartorial legacy of the Black Dandy with “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. The exhibition will explore how clothing has shaped Black identities within the Atlantic diaspora, drawing inspiration from co-curator Monica Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The showcase will examine Black dandyism as both a style and a political statement, guided by the 12 principles outlined in Zora Neale Hurston’s 1934 essay, The Characteristics of Negro Expression. Through fashion, photography, art and film, the exhibition traces the journey of Black individuals from enslavement to becoming global trendsetters. Notably, this will be the first men-focused exhibit since 2003's Men in Skirts.

When is the Met Gala 2025?

The 2025 Met Gala will take place on May 5, followed by the launch of the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibition on May 10, which will run until October 26, 2025.

Who are the Met Gala 2025 co-chairs?

This year’s co-chairs are some of the best-dressed men of the moment. The (almost) all-male lineup includes Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo (who attended his first-ever Met Gala last year), Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and, of course, Anna Wintour. NBA legend LeBron James joins as an honourary co-chair.

What can we expect?

On the red carpet, expect tailoring and new takes on traditional suiting, with a heavy influence from Black history and fashion, both in America and beyond. References might span from African traditional dress to Harlem Renaissance suits, along with nods to contemporary designers like Grace Wales Bonner, Virgil Abloh, and Pharrell Williams.

After criticism about the lack of Black representation at the Costume Institute in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, this theme marks a promising step forward – though we’ll have to wait seven more months to see how attendees choose to interpret the theme.
