ER may have gone off the air in 2009, but NBC's long-running drama Law & Order is bringing some of the cast members together again.

On Jan. 23, the newest episode of the procedural will feature Maura Tierney, who assumed the role of the squad's newest lieutenant when season 24 kicked off in the fall.

Tierney, who plays Lt. Jessica Brady, was joined on set by fellow ER alums Eriq La Salle, who directed the episode, and Mekhi Phifer, who will guest star as suspect Lyman Ross.

PEOPLE has an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the reunion.

Tierney joined the cast of ER in 2000 as nurse Abby Lockhart while La Salle portrayed Dr. Peter Benton. Phifer played Dr. Greg Pratt.

The latest L&O episode, titled "Greater Good," will see detectives Shaw and Riley "clash with an undercover officer unwilling to cooperate" after a music mogul is found dead, while ADA Price and DA Baxter "disagree on how the victim’s reputation could sway the jury’s verdict in the case," according to NBC.

While Phifer plays a suspect in the murder case, this marks La Salle's second time directing Law & Order this season.

As for La Salle's time on ER?

“Everyone was just really cool,” La Salle previously told PEOPLE of cast mates like George Clooney and Noah Wyle. “We bonded immediately.”

After leaving the medical drama, La Salle began a career directing and producing shows like Chicago P.D., but a decade ago he was drawn back to writing.

“I believe in pre-destiny, in people having a path,” he said to PEOPLE at the time (his three books, Laws of Depravity, Laws of Wrath and Laws of Annihilation, have cemented him in the thriller genre).

Mariska Hargitay, who famously plays Captain Olivia Benson on SVU, portrayed desk clerk Cynthia Hooper during ER's fourth season before she was cast as Benson.

“After ER I said, ‘What am I — what am I going to do? This is the greatest show ever. There’s no other show. Oh, except for Law & Order," Hargitay recently told Willie Geist on Sunday Today. "I said to myself. And I was making jokes, ‘I need to get on that Law & Order.'"

Law & Order airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET followed by SVU at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
