Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is clarifying comments she made about award season campaigns, social media and fellow Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres.

After Gascón, 52, appeared to claim "there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Pérez down" on social media during a Jan. 28 video interview with a Brazilian outlet, the Spanish actress said in a statement that she did not mean to suggest Torres, 59, or anyone "directly associated with her" is smearing Emilia Pérez.

“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres and it has been wonderful getting to know her the past few months,” Gascón said. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience."

"Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”

In Gascón's interview, the actress, speaking in Spanish, criticized online campaigns for and against certain movies.

“What I don’t like are social media teams — people who work with these people — trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn’t lead anywhere," Gascón reportedly said, according to Variety.

"You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s. I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie. However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Pérez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine.”

Torres spoke highly of Gascón in an Instagram video shared Jan. 25 in which she implored fans of I'm Still Here to avoid speaking negatively about Gascón and other Best Actress nominees Demi Moore, Mikey Madison and Cynthia Erivo.

The Brazillian actress said Gascón recently introduced her to "the highest concentration of amazing actors I had seen in my life" at a recent W Magazine party in Los Angeles when Torres "was feeling a bit out of place."

"Each one in their own way, everyone there is truly deserving. Everyone won. Let's not mistreat anyone [and] not create a situation that we're against each other, for God's sake."

"What I mean is that everyone there deserves our affection. Let's not feed hate, you know?" Torres added elsewhere in that video. "And I want to say that Karla Sofía Gascón, I love you forever."
