Elsbeth’s Carrie Preston Previews Valentine’s Day Meet-Cute With Ioan Gruffudd — Plus, Watch Sneak Peek

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Elsbeth is staging a strange but delightful meet-cute between its titular character and guest star Ioan Gruffudd in this Thursday’s episode (CBS, 10/9c).

The Forever vet plays Angus, a musician in Scotland who is witness to a crime via a video installation that connects his tiny town with New York City… and Elsbeth. But with no sound to accompany the video, the pair is forced to comically mime their way through their first conversation, in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek.

“It’s a very unusual, technologically-based meet-cute, but on a very large scale,” star Carrie Preston tells TVLine. “[Elsbeth] is at the crime scene for a crime that happens in New York, and then she sees this portal, and she realizes it’s a camera that’s trained exactly on where the crime occurred. So that sparks her interest, and she thinks this could possibly help out in the solving of the crime. And so, she gets it fired up again, and the first person she sees there is this guy, Angus.”

Although Elsbeth and Angus are thousands of miles apart, their long-distance chemistry is immediately palpable as they work together through the screen to solve the murder case.

“It’s just so fascinating to be standing in New York for her and then looking at Scotland, so large on a screen in front of her, with sheep and local townspeople, and a world very far away, and yet, it’s right in front of her,” Preston describes. “I think he feels the same way, and they have a real spark because of that, and also because of the case, and he realizes that he can be of help to her. And so, they start connecting in that way, as well.”
