Drew Barrymore isn't quite ready for her daughter's teenage years.

On Wednesday, May 1, the actress spoke with Jessica Capshaw, 47, on her eponymous talk show about how her daughter Olive, 11, is getting ready to enter her teenager era. Capshaw, who shares her kids Luke, 16, Eve, 13, Poppy, 11, and Josephine, 8, with husband Christopher Gavigan, offered Barrymore some advice, having already entered that stage with two of her kids.

Speaking about parenting, Barrymore, 49, says, "My daughter who’s 12…who is about to turn 12, she really wants to be 16. Going on 25.”

"So did we!” Capshaw exclaims.

“I know! It’s so triggering.” Barrymore adds, falling back onto the couch and asking Capshaw for help navigating the transition with her daughter. "What do I do?"

Capshaw notes that although it can be "really challenging," it can also be "as easy as you make it."

"And with phones, that was the first thing. Smartphones," the Grey's Anatomy actress explains. "Everyone else has a phone. I want a phone.’ We waited until she was 13. And there was a contract and there was like, ‘What do I expect from you, what do you expect from me? What does this phone mean?’"

Barrymore shares that it's been difficult for her to reckon with the fact that she also used to act out in the same ways as her daughter, recounting a conversation she recently had with Cameron Diaz.

"And not to drop a name, but one of my best friends happens to be Cameron Diaz. And I was like, ‘And the way these girls dress today!’ And she goes, ‘Oh come on. You remember the ‘70s with bikini tops and dolphin shorts!’" Barrymore jokes.

"And I was like, ‘Yeah, but it felt different!.’ And she was like, ‘Come on. We all wore tube tops and tiny shorts.'"

In addition to daughter Olive, Barrymore is mom to daughter Frankie, 9, whom she shares with ex Will Kopelman.

Speaking with PEOPLE in March, Barrymore said that she bases her conversations with her daughters on "honesty" above all else.

"I'm always talking about honesty. If it's the truth, we're gonna find our way through," she shared.

She also tries to encourage her daughters to "ask yourself, without feeling like there's any judgment or blame coming at you, at your part in something. I really talk to them about that and how I know it's hard. I'm really aware that we really can only control ourselves and not other people or the exterior world, so when we self-explore, we can find what we can learn from it and what we can do."
