Depending on the type, cheese isn't inherently unhealthy for dogs. But that doesn't mean it should be eaten with every meal. Like any other human food, cheese should be consumed by dogs in moderation.

According to the ASPCA, "because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other dairy-based products cause them diarrhea or other digestive upset." So, if your dog eats too much cheese, it could lead to gastrointestinal issues.

What kinds of cheese is are safe for dogs?

Stick to low-fat cheeses, such as mozzarella and cottage cheese, if you plan to treat your pup. Cheeses that are high in fat can contribute to weight gain and obesity, the American Kennel Club warns.

Never feed dogs bleu cheese, according to Purina. The fungus in this type of cheese can produce the compound roquefortine C, which dogs have a sensitivity to. Consuming this cheese could lead to vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and fever.

Cheeses that have additional ingredients, like fruits, nuts and garlic, should also be avoided.
