Demi Moore Addresses 'Shaming' Over Nudity in New Film
Demi Moore's new horror movie, The Substance, has made headlines for its nude scenes—but the 61-year-old actress says that's not the focus of the film.
Directed by Coralie Fargeat and co-starring Margaret Qualley, The Substance stars Moore as a TV fitness guru named Elizabeth Sparkle whose boss (Dennis Quaid) wants to replace her with someone younger—so she uses a mysterious black-market drug to create a more youthful version of herself (played by Qualley).
In an interview with Deadline, Moore opened up about why she was interested in playing the part.
"As a role, it clearly pushed me out of my own comfort zone and I felt that it tackled the subject matter of dealing with not just aging and that kind of male perspective of the idealized woman as women have many times bought into but also that battle that exists within ourselves, that intense harsh judgment that we exist with, that pursuit of perfection that doesn’t exist," the star explained.

Moore also pointed out something she found "kind of intriguing" about the coverage The Substance has received in the media.
"It’s interesting I just saw a couple of little headlines (about Substance), particularly in English-speaking press, and it was interesting almost to the point of the movie that the way they were putting the headline was only focused on it being about nudity," she shared. "And I thought, 'Oh, how sad that it’s kind of being presented in a way that’s shaming and diminishing.' It’s the least part of the movie," Moore continued.
The Substance premieres in theaters on Sept. 20.
