Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes reveals devastating family news

Aussie comedian Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has opened up about a secret personal tragedy, fighting back tears on his radio show Hughesy, Ed and Erin.

Hughesy tearfully revealed his family is in the process of saying their goodbyes to his mum, who he said was 'unwell' and in the final stages of her life.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks," Hughesy said, choking up.

"My mum's unwell and the family have gathered around her and we're celebrating her life," he continued. "She's still with us, but it won't be long."

Hughesy continued to open up about his mum, saying the family had been going through treasured photos and memories.

'She's asleep now'

"She's a beautiful woman, who's been a great matriarch of the family, and we're all around her at the moment."

"We're going through photos, the memories of all the sacrifice and all the good times... she's done so well in her life, and we'll miss her a lot.

But she's always been stoic and never complained. She's asleep now and she probably won't wake up again. She's a beautiful woman."

Hughesy then went on to say his mother hasn't lost her sense of humour, saying she had surprised the family and the nurses with some quips.

“We were around and didn’t think she could even speak again, and one of the nurses was lifting her and said, ‘I’m sorry if I drop you’, and Mum just whispered, ‘it doesn't matter now’, and made the nurse laugh," Hughesy shared.

She also managed to crack another joke when other family members were visiting.

“My niece was by the side of the bed the other day, and her foot touched the bucket beside the bed, and Mum said, ‘I’m the one kicking the bucket, not you!’," Hughesy said, managing a laugh.

“So she was still coming out with zingers … she’s a beautiful woman.”
