Dating Apps Are a Nightmare. New Horror Film “The Dead Thing” Takes It to Another Level in First Trailer (Exclusive)

'The Dead Thing' premieres on Shudder Feb. 14

Horror fans are in for a treat this Valentine's Day.

The horror-focused streamer Shudder has shared the trailer for its upcoming movie The Dead Thing exclusively with PEOPLE. The movie stars Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) as Alex, a woman who finds herself constantly on a string of dates obtained through dating apps until she meets Kyle (Ben Smith-Petersen), whom an official synopsis for the movie describes as "a mysterious, charming young man."

The pair find an immediate attraction to each other and spend the night together, but when they next cross paths Kyle appears not to know Alex. Her reality appears to change as the movie's story develops, and at one point she arrives at her office only to learn she has been mysteriously absent from work for nine days.

Through her investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences."

The new movie is written and directed by filmmaker Elric Kane, whom film fans may know best as the host of the Pure Cinema and Colors of the Dark podcasts.

"I worked in the very office the film is set in and a co-worker was always recounting her many adventures of online dating and the various apps and strange encounters she had," Kane tells PEOPLE of the new movie. "It sounded exhausting but I wrote down a note on my phone 'Internet Dating App Horror??' and a few months later it led to a full idea for the film."

"I think people will relate to the alienation of dating and I think people often find themselves in sudden relationships that are empty or soul sucking as a way to escape the loneliness of modern dating and the fear of being alone," Hunt tells PEOPLE.

The Dead Thing begins streaming on Shudder Feb. 14.
