Danny DeVito Found Out Daughter Lucy Was Pregnant 30 Minutes Before Performing on Broadway: 'I Just Burst into Tears'

Danny DeVito will never forget the moment his daughter Lucy DeVito told him she was expecting her first baby.
As guests on the Monday, Dec. 16 episode of The Talk, the proud dad, 80, revealed how he discovered his 41-year-old daughter was pregnant. PEOPLE confirmed Lucy's pregnancy back in February, and she has since welcomed a baby boy named Carmine with her fiancé in July.
The father-daughter duo have been performing together in the broadway play titled I Need That, and Danny explained, "Every night she would come down a half hour before and we would talk about how we were going to do the play."

"One night she sits in her spot and she's got her cup of tea," he continued, emphasizing that in 30 minutes they were "going to go on."
"She says, 'Dad, I got something to tell you. I'm pregnant,' " DeVito recalled, adding, "I just burst into tears."
As for how baby Carmine is doing, Lucy shares, "We're in the thick of it now. You know, sleeping here and there, but he's a joy. And he's got a great grandpa!"
She added, "He's getting to the point now where he's smiling and very alert and, yeah, he's amazing."
DeVito also shared that his new grandson will call him "Pop-Pop," along with his older grandchild, a girl named Sinclair Lucille DeVito.

Lucy revealed she was expecting in February, when she walked the 2024 SAG Awards red carpet, debuting her baby bump in a red dress alongside her mom, Rhea Perlman, 76.
In June 2023, the Cheers alum revealed on an episode of the Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus podcast that her daughter Grace DeVito had welcomed a daughter of her own.

The Barbie actress also reflected on what becoming a grandmother meant to her. "Everybody said it'll change your life when you have a grandchild, and it does," she explained.
Perlman continued, "There's a certain love, I mean I felt it when my own children were born, the kind of love I never felt before for anything ... But this was a profound kind of feeling, and here it is again. They can do no wrong. Looking at a new human being is so amazing, that people create other people. It's mind-boggling."
