As Craig Melvin steps into his new role on the Today show on January 13, it would be totally understandable if he were feeling nervous. Well, he does have some thoughts about this next phase of his career — and he shared them exclusively with Good Housekeeping.
We caught up with the longtime news anchor on January 8 in NYC, where he was on hand to support the launch of the Start TODAY app. When asked about taking over for Hoda Kotb as co-anchor for the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. slot on the NBC morning series, he shared his hopes for what his legacy on the Today show could be.
"My hope is very simple: to just not screw it up," he joked before getting a little more serious about his answer. "The Today show has been around for more than 70 years now. No one wants to be the guy steering the ship when it runs aground. I basically want to continue the tradition that's been established."
That's not all he had to say about his newest venture with the Today show. He'll be sitting alongside Savannah Guthrie for the first two hours of the daytime program, and Craig detailed his excitement about working directly with someone who holds so much importance to him both on and off the air.
"I am most excited about working alongside Savannah Guthrie," he shared in response to what he's most looking forward to. "A pro's pro, the gold standard. She's become like the big sister I never had growing up, and to be able to start this new chapter with her, it's pretty exciting."
Even though Craig is thrilled about his new adventure, he's also grateful for the opportunity and aware that he has big shoes to fill.
In a post shared on Instagram on January 10, Craig commended Hoda for all she did throughout her time on the Today show.
"Hoda is the definition of compassion, love, and has been the heartbeat of @todayshow," he wrote alongside images of him, Hoda and other co-hosts. "I am so grateful to have you as a colleague and a close friend. Cheers to you. It's not goodbye. It's a see you later. I love you. Thank you. ❤️."
Congrats to Craig, and we can't wait to see him bright and early every morning!
