Colman Domingo says he 'completely' transforms into Joe Jackson for “Michael” biopic: 'I don't look like myself at all'
The movie arrives in theaters Oct. 3.
Colman Domingo is teasing an unrecognizable transformation as Jackson patriarch Joe in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic.
Speaking with W Magazine for the Best Performances issue, the Golden Globe-nominated star of Sing Sing revealed that he does not "look like myself at all" in the upcoming Michael, in theaters Oct. 3. "I completely transform," said Domingo. "My skin is lighter because Joe was a bit more fair-skinned. I had prosthetics on top of my head above my eye, and my nose is different."
Expect precise wardrobe, too. "We really leaned into the different periods of Joe, where he was a little bit younger and slicker and a bit more of the hustle," added the actor. "And then when he started to have his little pooch, I needed that pooch. And the pants were riding right underneath, like all the men that I know that wear their bellies proud."

From screenwriter John Logan, the upcoming biopic will star Michael Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson in the title role and chronicle the life and career of the late King of Pop, who became a divisive figure later in life due to allegations of child sex abuse. Jackson and his estate have long maintained his innocence, including during his 2005 criminal trial for child molestation for which he was acquitted.

The film will also star Nia Long as Jackson matriarch Katherine and Miles Teller as Jackson's attorney and co-executor of the Jackson estate, John Branca. Per the press release, it promises a “riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man," documenting his “human side and personal struggles." Jackson died in June 2009 from acute propofol intoxication at the age of 50.
His father, Joe Jackson, was also considered a polarizing figure, having been accused of abuse by some of his children. The patriarch died in June 2018 from cancer at the age of 89. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2024, Domingo said he was drawn to the complicated role.

"I wanted to take it on because I know that there's many public opinions about Joe Jackson that are in conflict of what maybe family members or people who knew him think or believe," said Domingo. "And even that is very complicated. I want to figure him out and find out what made him tick. How did he create these magnificent artists, these world-acclaimed artists? Because it was a lot through Joe, what Joe did and his impact."
"Whether good, bad, or ugly, I'm not sure," added the star. "But I know that I'm curious to find out, and I want to find out what's underneath the hat and the earrings and the gold chains and all."
