Colin Farrell jokes that he did “The Penguin” performance 'all by myself'

The actor won Best Actor in a Limited Series for his performance in the Batman-adjacent HBO show.

Most acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes are filled with the names of all the people who made the winner’s achievement possible. But when Colin Farrell took the stage to accept an award for his starring performance in The Penguin, he decided to flip the script.

“I have no one to thank on this one, I did it all by myself!” Farrell joked. “Just a raw, pared-away performance.”

Obviously, Farrell’s performance as Gotham City criminal Oz Cobb (first in 2022’s The Batman and then in 2024’s follow-up miniseries The Penguin) was not the product of one person. The heavy makeup that transformed the impossibly handsome Farrell into the scarred and pock-marked Cobb required a lot of hard work and artistry from makeup designer Michael Marino, who spoke about his process during The Penguin’s panel at San Diego Comic Con back in July. Marino cited disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and John Cazale’s Fredo Corleone from The Godfather as visual references for Cobb’s look, as well as a few more natural ones.

"I looked at injured birds and older, grizzled penguins, and they had these chipped beaks and all this stuff," Marino told the convention audience. "So on one side of his face in silhouette, you have this curved, scarred face on the side, but if you line it up with a photo of a bird, it mimics the mouth of a bird."

Farrell did eventually thank Marino and his team, as well as other collaborators like The Batman director Matt Reeves (“he’d kill me if I didn’t thank him!”), The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc, and costar Cristin Milioti, who earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series for her performance as Sofia Falcone but lost out to Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country.

Farrell beat out fellow nominees Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer), Kevin Kline (Disclaimer), Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Ewan McGregor (A Gentleman in Moscow), and Andrew Scott (Ripley) to get his win. Farrell did shout out Scott and a little-known movie called Drinking Crude that they made together all the way back in 1997.

“You can’t even find it on Betamax,” Farrell said. “It doesn’t exist! But we go back that far.”

Farrell couldn’t end the speech without thanking the people who really matter, though: “Craft services!”
