A Coles shopper has been left red-faced after she accidentally misunderstood the supermarket’s latest promotion with SMEG and thought she was getting “the buy of the century”. Coles recently teamed up with the Italian brand, best known for their range of retro appliances in vibrant colours, to offer customers SMEG-branded kitchen products when they spend money on groceries.

All you have to do is spend $20 or more in one transaction and scan your Flybuys card to earn credits, which can then be redeemed on SMEG’s kitchen knives collection. You can also purchase the knives at full retail price, with the dollar amount equivalent to the number of credits required, or via half pay using 50 per cent credits and 50 per cent cash.

Taking to TikTok on Tuesday, one shopper (@isabella.mcgavin) said she couldn’t believe Coles was selling SMEG’s knife block for $100 as part of the promotion - which is available through half credits and half pay or full pay only.

While she thought she was getting “the buy of the century” by purchasing the product, she ended up having to spend an additional $300 after misreading the fine print.

“The way in which I was convinced I was getting a full SMEG knife block for $100,” she detailed. “I’ve had my eye on this knife block since I moved out of home four years ago and I saw it at Coles for $100 and I’m like, ‘Why are they giving it away for so cheap? These retail for like, $500 to $700’.”

The woman explained that they had 10 credits through FlyBuys which allowed her to buy the knife block for $90, and she was “so excited” before realising it didn’t include the full set of six knives.

“I was like, oh my god, $90 for a knife block that retails for like, $500 to $700,” she continued. “We get home, it’s just the block. It’s just the block! So I’ve got an empty block and I’ve got no knives for the block.”

She ended the video confessing that she ended up buying the entire knife collection at Coles for $192, resulting in what she described as a “$300 random Monday night purchase”.

The full range at Coles includes a small vegetable knife for 20 credits, a utility knife for 26 credits, a meat knife for 30 credits, a bread knife for 36 credits, a santoku knife for 40 credits, and a chef’s knife for 40 credits.

The video received a mixed response from fans, with some people questioning how she didn’t realise the block didn’t come with knives when it’s clearly specified on the box and Coles’ website.

“Wait, you did see the knives next to the block right? I’m so confused,” one person wrote, while another added, “Didn't read the small print”.

“Girl that’s on you haha there’s not even a picture of a knife on the box,” a third said, followed by someone else who remarked, “Did someone not pay attention to those big adverts?”.

The woman also took to the comments to acknowledge that the error was entirely her fault and the video was simply intended to laugh at her “stupid mistake”.

Meanwhile, some followers admitted they “would have done the same thing” and others said they’re big fans of the SMEG promotion.

“I’ve just finished collecting the whole set and got the block yesterday in cream and I am obsessed,” one shopper shared, with another writing, “I've already got 246 points. I'm planning to get them all in one go haha”.

“I’ve owned my SMEG block and knives (through a supermarket promotion in NZ) since 2020. They are still going strong. Worth the $300 you spent,” a different user commented.
