Cody Simpson has opened up about a personal 'fear' ahead of Olympics

The singer-turned-swimmer also said his music career was far from over.

Cody Simpson has opened up about his return to swimming after a singing career, saying that 'fear of failure' is what motivates him to succeed at the 2024 Olympics.

The award-winning musician appeared on Sunrise to chat about all things swimming, saying that he was driven by wanting to prove people wrong.

“I think coming back into the sport of swimming and doing it the way I did, I was inevitably going to face a lot of doubters and a lot of naysayers and things like that,” he said.

“Fear of failure is often what gets me up in the morning.”

The singer is currently preparing to qualify for his Olympic debut in Paris next year, admitting that the mental toll of his high-profile career in both the entertainment and sports industry is 'taxing'.

Aged only 26, Cody competed in last year's Commonwealth Games where he won both gold and silver medals. He credited his support network around him for grounding him and driving him to succeed.

“I think I’m one of the luckiest people in the world to have the group of people around me that I have, from my family to my coach to my training partners,” he said.

He also elaborated more on his gruelling training schedule.

“We do about nine sessions in the pool a week, about an hour and a half to two hours each session, and that’s accompanied by three gym sessions a week (which are) about an hour and a half as well.”

On juggling both careers, he said fans of his music shouldn't fear that his singing career is over, stating he'd be back to playing music professionally when his splash in the pool was over.

“Music has been my primary love and focus for the majority of my life; I spent 10 years of my life playing music professionally, and plan on doing it again as soon as I hang up the goggles,” he said.

“I absolutely love what I’m doing at the moment. I love the feeling I get after a hard session. I think ultimately life’s good when you’re challenging yourself like this.”
