Chuck Todd, Former Meet the Press Moderator, Exits NBC After 18 Years

TV journalist Chuck Todd, who in 2023 stepped down as host of NBC’s Meet the Press, is now leaving the network altogether, he confirmed on Friday.

“There’s never a perfect time to leave a place that’s been a professional home for so long, but I’m pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the cusp of going from ‘pie in the sky’ to ‘near reality,’ Todd told NBC News in a memo obtained by TVLine’s sister site Variety. “So I’m grateful for the chance to get a jump start on my next chapter during this important moment.”

Though specific details of Todd’s post-NBC future remain unclear, he has confirmed that his podcast Chuck Toddcast will continue, with a new home expected to be announced soon. He also says he plans to “continue to share my reporting and unique perspective of covering politics with data and history as important baselines in understanding where we were, where we are and where we’re going.”

In a statement, NBC News said, “We’re grateful for Chuck’s many contributions to our political coverage during his nearly two-decade career at NBC News and for his deep commitment to Meet the Press and its enduring legacy. We wish him all the best in his next endeavors.”

Todd first joined NBC in 2007, initially serving as NBC News’ political director, then its chief White House correspondent. In September 2014, he succeeded David Gregory as Meet the Press moderator, a role he filled until 2023. Kristen Welker has since replaced Todd as host of Meet the Press, though he’s still the face of MTP Daily, an extension of Meet the Press that streams on NBC News NOW.

“To say that this has been the honor and privilege of my lifetime is an understatement,” Todd said during his final broadcast as Meet the Press moderator in September 2023. “This is simply the pinnacle of political journalism and something my younger self never imagined. No matter how much of a grind the current political climate is, wearing me down on any given day, I still always have had a pinch-me-I-can’t-believe-it feeling every time I hear my name introduced as the moderator of the longest-running show in the history of television.”

According to Semafor, which first reported the news of Todd’s NBC exit, he was slated to work on longform projects for NBC after stepping down from Meet the Press; after leaving that role, though, his on-air presence on NBC and MSNBC has been significantly reduced.
