Chris Pine Says He Doesn't Know If He Will Appear in “Princess Diaries 3” but Thinks Sequel Is 'Fantastic' News
Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in the third installment
Chris Pine doesn't know if he will return to Genovia with Anne Hathaway.
Days after it was confirmed that The Princess Diaries 3 is underway, the actor, 44, was asked if he will appear in the franchise's third installment on the Tuesday, Oct. 8 edition of Today with Hoda & Jenna.
"I don't know anything," Pine — whose character, Nicholas Devereaux, professed his love to Hathaway's Mia Thermopolis at the end of 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement — told hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager.
"You don't know anything? You have a major role in it," Bush Hager, 42, responded.
Kotb, 60, quickly agreed, telling Pine, "You are Princess Diaries."
After the co-hosts added that the film couldn't be done without Pine, he told them, "That's very sweet. Call Disney. Call [Disney CEO] Bob Iger," and said he knew nothing about the new project when asked if he would be a part of it.
“The answer is honestly I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic," said Pine.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which premiered three years after the first film in the franchise, The Princess Diaries, hit theaters in 2001.
Onboard to direct the third installment is Adele Lim, who told Variety that she is "a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries."
"I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide," Lim said.
Hathaway reacted to Lim joining the project by sharing Variety's article in an Instagram post alongside a clip from the first film.

“Miracles happen ✨👑 . Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️🔥,” she captioned the post.
Last year, Hathaway responded to fans' anticipation for the long-awaited third installment by telling PEOPLE that it was "thrilling" to "see the level of excitement for it."
'We feel the exact same, and I know it's probably very frustrating. It's a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things," she said.
