Chicago Med Boss Teases ‘Huge’ Archer Episode, Weighs In on Possible Hannah Romance
Chicago Med fans, get ready to get more insight into Dr. Dean Archer.
The doc — who almost quit his job at the hospital recently — has been busy as of late, saving the life of Director of Patient Services Sharon Goodwin and coming through during last week’s crossover event to help rescue Fire’s Stella, P.D.’s Ruzek and dozens of innocent lives. And later this season, the trauma surgeon will get the spotlight in a special Med installment.

“Episode 17 is a huge episode for Archer. It’s called ‘The Book of Archer,'” showrunner Allen MacDonald tells TVLine. “The whole episode is from Archer’s point of view, so he’s, literally, in every scene… We’ll do a deep dive into his character.”
Given that one of the strongest relationships in Archer’s life is with his pal/colleague Dr. Hannah Asher, it’s no surprise that the hour will also feature the duo.
“Their friendship is a really strong, foundational dramatic thing on the show. There is a tension there between them,” MacDonald says, adding, “You’ll see more of Hannah and Archer in that episode.”
Steven Weber, who plays Archer, previously told TVLine that the ‘shipper support for a romantic storyline between his character and Hannah “makes sense because they have a bond. But at the end of the day, I can’t see that happening. But something else happened. Something that is, in a way, more important,” the actor shared.
The characters have “built something that’s not romantic, but it is loving. Something that is intimate, but not sexual,” Weber continued. “And it’s hard for them to kind of express it, but you feel it when you see them.”
That said, Weber and his co-star Jessy Schram (aka Hannah) did at one point wonder if their alter egos were on the verge of veering from platonic into something more.
“For a second, we thought, too, like, ‘Hey, maybe they’ll get together. That’ll be weird and fun, but if that happens, let’s not make a traditional [relationship],” Weber recalled. “These are people who are complicated, and they’re a bit broken. [It] should be hard for them to relate, and I think the writers did a good job in avoiding that potential mess. It’s very nice for people to think that [they should be a couple], but there’s something else at play here that’s still developing.”
Chicago Med airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
