Chappell Roan's Father Breaks Down in Tears Singing 'Pink Pony Club', Reveals the Lesson He Learned from His Daughter
"We love her so much, and we could never not be proud of her," Roan's dad says in Apple TV+'s 'Carpool Karaoke' Christmas special
Chappell Roan's parents love their pink pony girl.
In Apple TV+'s special Christmas episode of Carpool Karaoke, which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15, Roan, 26, was joined by her parents, Dwight and Kara Amstutz, as she and host Zane Lowe traveled through her home state of Missouri. The "Red Wine Supernova" singer's mom and dad even joined in a sing-along of her hit "Pink Pony Club."
The moment proved to be an emotional one for both of her parents, but especially for her father, who wiped away tears as the family belted out the line "don't think I've left you all behind."
"Pink Pony Club" is a semi-autobiographical song, which focuses on a young woman leaving her small Southern town and religious upbringing behind to embrace her true self in California. Roan has revealed that she was inspired to write the song after seeing go-go dancers perform at the iconic gay bar The Abbey in West Hollywood. In the episode, it's clear the lyrics resonate with both of Roan's parents.
"I hope that that’s something that she always knows, that we love her so much, and we could never not be proud of her," Dwight told Lowe and Roan after the song came to an end. "I think about this a lot and try not to get emotional about it."
Roan's father then had to pause a moment to compose himself before continuing, "What she has taught me as a father is respect for other people and all people, and that’s what I want people to understand. Everything that is about her is about loving everybody, and she has taught me that."
Kara was also emotional after singing along with her daughter, sharing with Lowe that she "started to tear up just listening to her sing it just now."
"We love her so much, and we’re so proud of what she does and who she is and what she stands for," she added.

Roan's mother also revealed that "Pink Pony Club" is a song she loves to sing along to during her daughter's shows. She noted that she loved seeing "people just respond to that song so much."
Elsewhere in the episode, Roan discussed her religious upbringing and shared how freeing it was for her to move to California.
“I know for a lot of people, it’s actually very freeing," the singer said. "For me it almost did the opposite, where I felt like I couldn’t be myself, that who I was was a sin and I was going to hell no matter how good of a person I was or how much I loved God, for being gay. And I just couldn’t handle feeling ashamed anymore."
"Pink Pony Club" appears on Roan's debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, which she released in September 2023. The album — as well as her smash single "Good Luck, Babe!" — earned Roan six 2025 Grammy nominations, including a nod in the "big four" categories: best new artist, song of the year, record of the year and album of the year.
