Caterina Scorsone is celebrating World Down Syndrome Day with her family.

On Friday, March 21, the Grey's Anatomy actress, 43, shared a few photos on her Instagram as she took a minute to honor the special day. In one black-and-white photo, Scorsone can be seen wearing a puffer jacket and holding her 8-year-old daughter Pippa, who has Down syndrome.

Behind the mother-daughter duo, the words "I love you still" are written in spray paint across a wall. In a second photo, the two are pictured walking down the street together.

"Happy World Down syndrome day!💛💙 Today is a day when we remember that every single person is unique. They are unique in their perspective, in their experiences and in their genes and chromosomes," Scorsone wrote in her caption.

"If you want to know how to Love (which I promise you is better than owning a T*sla) try loving a person for all that they specifically, are. Maybe even try loving someone who’s chromosomes have a little bit extra. Happy World Down syndrome Day, family. 💛💙."

World Down Syndrome Day occurs on March 21st and celebrates the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. The day has been observed by the United Nations since 2012.

In addition to Pippa, Scorsone is mom to daughters Lucky, 5, and Eliza, 12, who she shares with ex-husband Rob Giles.

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2020, Scorsone shared that her second daughter's "difference lit a match in my life and in the life of my family."

"When my daughter Pippa was born, I was scared. I didn't know anything about trisomy 21, the name for the occurrence of a third copy of the 21st chromosome, better known as Down syndrome," she told PEOPLE. "... I didn't know anything. All I knew about Down syndrome was that people were afraid of it, so I figured I should be too."

The actress noted that her perspective quickly changed, seeing Pippa's differences as individuality, just like anyone else's unique attributes. She added that Pippa's arrival "cracked open a door in my life" — for the better.

"It suddenly became crystal clear," she said, adding, "There is no standard, objective, perfect human being. The metrics of perfection are arbitrary and imposed in the service of those who fit them. My daughter is perfect. Exactly the way she is."

"Pippa is perfect exactly as she is. So are you, and so am I. The only way we lose sight of that perfection is to look for it somewhere else," the mom of three said.
