Cassandra Thorburn has revealed ‘financial necessity’ forced her to return to work after splitting with Karl Stefanovic—despite her ex-husband’s salary at Today reportedly exceeding $2 million.

The revelation was made in a column for Kidspot where the mother-of-three discussed how her high profile divorce three years ago impacted her style of parenting.

“My family broke down, and I’ve had to navigate making my way back into the workforce — not because it felt right, but out of financial necessity,” she wrote.

“I had always planned to re-enter, but I’d thought it would be on my terms.”

Mum’s juggling act

Cassandra went on to explain how the split in October 2016, made her ‘juggle’ professional and parenting responsibilities for the first time in a decade.

“I am sure many single mums could relate to this position,” she said in reference to accepting a spot on this year’s Dancing With The Stars as it provided a full-time paycheck.

Despite her newly revealed financial woes, Cassandra’s ex-husband, Karl Stefanovic is still contracted to Channel Nine, as one of the network’s highest-paid employees.

The former Today show host reportedly inked a $9 million contract in early 2016 which is will see him signed to the network until at least the end of this year.

Navigating change

However, since ending their 21-year marriage in 2016, relations haven’t always been easy for the former couple who share children Jackson, 20, Ava, 14, and River, 12.

Last week Cassandra opened up about how she navigates co-parenting with Karl and his new wife, Jasmine Yarbrough on The Juggling Act podcast.

Although she didn’t go into detail about her family’s custody arrangement, the 48-year-old revealed the post-split arrangement hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

“Even if there's an amicable agreement between the parties, it still becomes hard,” she said of her family’s situation.

However, she wasn’t critical of the set-up and added the likelihood of a positive outcome can be increased if certain processes are followed.

“There obviously is a way to navigate it. I don't think there's a textbook of instructions in point form [where] you can guarantee you're going to get that end result,” she said.
