Cara Delevingne transforms into Elton John for 'Step into Christmas' music video: Watch

Move over, Taron Egerton. A new actor is taking on the role of Elton John.

The "Rocket Man" singer, 77, on Wednesday released a new music video for his classic holiday song "Step into Christmas," in which he is played by none other than actress Cara Delevingne.

The meta video takes place in a recording studio behind the scenes of the original "Step into Christmas," with Delevingne portraying a young John. She recreates his look and performs at a piano adorned with a feather boa, though John's own track is used. The recreation is mixed with footage from the original video, as well as reenactments of producers putting it together.

This new version depicts the original as a fairly chaotic production, with a fan barging in holding a sign at one point and with producers corralling a turkey in a hallway.

John said in a statement that he saw Delevingne at Glastonbury Festival last summer, and they agreed they wanted to work together. "When someone suggested the idea of her playing me in a riff on the 1973 'Step into Christmas' video, I just thought it was the perfect opportunity," he said. "Thank God Cara thought the same because it came out great."

Delevingne, meanwhile, described John as an "idol" and said that being asked to play him was a "dream that I didn't know I had until it happened."

"Honestly, I wish I could pretend to be Elton every day," the "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" star joked. "I hope that Elton may one day return the favor and agree to play me in my not-yet-developed, written, pitched or funded biopic. Fingers crossed."

Written by John and Bernie Taupin, "Step into Christmas" was released in November 1973 and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Christmas Singles chart. The track was certified triple platinum last year in John's native United Kingdom.

But John recently revealed that he has been struggling with significant vision loss after an eye infection, which left him unsure when he could record again.

"It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see," he told "Good Morning America" in November. "And my left eye's not the greatest. There's hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I'm kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do (an interview) like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don't know, because I can't see a lyric for a start."
