Cameron Diaz Had the Most Relatable Reason for Her 10-Year Acting Hiatus
She also revealed how she spent her time off screen.
After spending 10 years away from the spotlight, Cameron Diaz never thought she'd make another movie again—that is until, she received a phone call from Jamie Foxx. In a new behind-the-scenes interview from her new Netflix film Back in Action, Diaz revealed the relatable reason behind her decade-long hiatus and how she spent her time off screen.
Diaz, who last starred in 2014's Annie, explained that after that movie, she said "no to everything" and put all her focus on her two kids—Raddix, 5, and 10-month-old Cardinal—whom she shares with her husband, Benji Madden, as well as her wine company, Avaline. "That was what I was putting most of my focus on," Diaz said. "If I was doing anything other than just sort of being a mom and living my day-to-day."
She continued, "That was pretty much it. I'm just trying to stay alive just like every other mother. I'm just trying to keep it going."
And while Diaz may be back on the big screen, she's not calling it comeback. “I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” Diaz said when asked if she's back for good during a recent interview with Empire. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to."
"I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment," she said, adding that she'll be doing "no more romcoms, only momcoms.”
Diaz's return to acting was first announced in June 2022, after Foxx convinced the actress to come out of retirement and join his latest project, promising her that they would have fun. "So it was literally, 'Do you wanna have some fun? Just have some fun!' And I think that's what brought her to it," Foxx previously told Entertainment Tonight. "We miss special moments sometimes in our business, and I think this is a special moment. So we're so happy that it's happening and looking forward to it."
