Can a so-called 'lip reading' give insight into my personality, health and future?

Delving deep into the art of lipsology... Ooh 🔮👄Getty/Jaime Lee - Hearst Owned

Pucker up, bb, we're taking a trip to the lipsologists office!

Tarot cards, palm readings and astrology; these are a few of my favourite things, alongside my black cat, Olive and all things beauty, ofc. And yes, while I've previously endured numerous spats with cynics who don't buy into the "woo woo" (a hater's words, not mine!), just like those who invest time and belief into religion, these practices are what I like to consider dictators of my fate. So, all that I ask of the universe is a lead to my Mr Perfectly Fine...

Now, despite my love for 'alt spirituality', shall we say, Lipsology® is a belief that circa a few weeks ago, I was yet to discover. That said, with a 'lil help from an expert – who I shall shortly acquaint you with – I'm now all for the art and science of reading lip prints... And hopefully, you will be, too. Ultimately, it is a combination of two of my previously mentioned favourite things, beauty and the so-called "woo woo".

But first, to the sceptics, I say: Read my lips and kiss my *mwah*!

What is lipsology?

Logging onto Zoom, I'm first faced with a pink rhinestoned lip necklace to rival those bedazzled chains of your favourite Y2K rapper (Jay Z, I'm looking @ you), followed by the friendly face of one of only nine certified lipsologists in the world, Ariana Lightningstorm. However, it's not only her iconic accessories that have my attention but the greenscreen background, too, which appears to be an image of the solar system. She's my kinda girl, if y'know what I mean ✨.

After immediately bonding over our shared love for all things pseudoscience, Ariana, who also has 30 years of palmistry and card practice (also known as palm and tarot reading) under her belt, shares with me what lipsology, aka lip print reading actually involves.

"Lipsology is the art of reading lip prints – whether it be a print on a mirror or piece of paper," Ariana tells me. "I'm looking to understand your 'Public Self', e.g. how people see you, your affection and the business aspect of life, and your 'Private Side', aka, what's going on internally, digestion and all things personal, though, it doesn't necessarily have to be deep."

But natch, I question "how?!", to which Ariana explains her analysis techniques taught by lipsology founder Jilly Eddy, who spent nearly 38 years collecting and analysing tens of thousands of lip prints including those of Johnny Cash and author Jean Auel. Ariana says that she does this by looking at the "size, shape, colour, intensity, lines or lack of lines, special markings, darker spots or lighter spots" in one's lip print. "What I'm looking for is the result of micro-movements of the muscles," she tells me.

Without getting too sciencey on me (uhhh, hi journo, right-brain creative over here!), Ariana shares that reflexology is a prime example of how the body is self-referent. "The brain is more connected to the lips and the hands than almost any other part of the body; handwriting analysis is the expression of what's going on within your brain when writing and the same applies to the lips, expressing verbally what's going on with you." This is why (and you will see with my below reading) Ariana asks clients to provide a number of kiss prints. Think: handwriting/lip print spatial awareness, direction, arrangement, e.t.c..

Medically speaking and in neuroanatomy, the cortical homunculus is a visualisation of internal, neurological connections. This is something Ariana says fascinates her.

Intrigued by the nitty-gritty details of lip reading and want to learn more? Well, the OG lipsologist, Jilly published a "manual" (as Ariana dubs it), named Lipsology: The Art and Science of Reading Lip Prints and is the perfect reference for swatting up on all things lipsology. The book is available to shop now on Amazon.

What went down in my lipsology reading?

With some context down, Ariana begins with my very own lip print analysis *squeaky bum moment*. So, on request, I take my lip product of choice, the all-new and super cute Dr. Jart Vital Hydra Solution Hydrating Lip Mask, and kiss my handheld mirror... to which I endure pre-teen flashbacks a là Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging's Georgia Nicholson (IYKYK).

Note: Prints can be read via a lipstick print on paper or in this case, a lip mask print on a mirror.

"The first one's definitely what I would call a problem solver lip print," Ariana says with no hesitation as I send over images of my prints via WhatsApp (mhm, we're on that level... humble brag).

"The upper lip print is less full than the lower in both prints, meaning you're an extremely good communicator. You're able to share your ideas, like teaching, writing, speaking, performing, and expressing yourself in some way. The upper lip. It is not not full, which tells me that you're good at listening... until you're not," Ariana tells me through laughter.

And I cannot deny the truth behind her analysis. I am a Leo sun sign, after all!

Continuing, I'm told I have a lack of Cupid's bow in my print, although prominent in my face, this indicates independence. "That's really variant and that's what Jilly told me," she says. "And she was absolutely right – she spent 14 years researching over 10,000 lip prints to make sure her system was at least 80 to 100 per cent accurate before she taught anybody. So there's 30 years of research in this; it's a very very good system," says Ariana.

Beyond my lip's "triangle" shape and fullness, Ariana mentions the print's colour intensity. "The darker inside edge means that you're not going to jump right into friendships. You're careful about who you trust, like and let in. You're trustworthy and you're loyal." Tick, tick, tick, IMO.

"And then there's also something about when you have a dark inline or stronger in line inside the inside edge of the lip print," Ariana continues. "That also means that you're hard to read. People may not know what's going on behind those pretty eyes of yours!"

Ariana and I proceed to go into 48 minutes worth of lipsology chattering, expanding on my print's spatial difference and what this means among many other things. But the questions that remain: Am I going to win the lottery or meet the love of my life within the next two weeks?

After our session – albeit as insightful as it was – I conclude that only the universe knows. As Ariana emphasises: "This is not about being psychic. We all are intuitive and can pick up things but this system can be taught." And as I now know through Ariana's waxing lyrical of Jilly, there are 25 categories of lip prints and over 100 subcategories in the system. That's 2500 possible points of interest in a set of lip prints. Impressive, much?

So, while I don't, unfortunately, have time (read: 30 years) to invest in learning how to read lip prints, for now, I'll take being "a good listener" and an "independent" woman! *Adds to CV under relevant skills*
