A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series Would Make Our Current Hellmouth a Little Easier to Face
Into every generation a Slayer is born, and I need the new one to get here, stakes blazing, ASAP.
The news of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s potential sequel series, a project in the works at Hulu, broke Monday. Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka Buffy herself, is said to be on board as a recurring presence in a story about a whole new vamp hunter. Even better: Several exciting, key, from-the-original-series-behind-the-scenes folks are also involved (producers Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, Dolly Parton), while another (disgraced original Buffy creator Joss Whedon) is not.

The world is a tough place to endure most days, and it feels even more that way as of late. Isn’t it nice to think about the return of someone who made a practice of saving it a lot?
I should note that the Buffy continuation is far from a sure thing — we Slayer faithful have had our hopes dashed before. For instance, I was very into the version of Buffy that Midnight, Texas showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen was trying to bring into existence in 2018. A Black Slayer, written by the woman whose other supernatural series included a bitchy, talking cat? Hell yeah. Or hell, no, as it turned out: That project went on permanent pause in 2022.
Since then, it’s not like the hellmouth got any less hellmouthy — and these last few months feel like they’ve been the hellmouthiest. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it, and woof, it can be tough to keep one’s hope glowing bright when natural disasters, executive orders and flat-out human-on-human cruelty seem ready to bare their fangs without notice. What’s worse: When you give in to despair, the nasty things win.

All this to say that even the idea, the mere possibility of seeing Gellar back in her quippy prime feels like a win right now. Buffy was funny, flawed and strong, even when she was sad. She railed against evil and rallied her troops and loved with a fierceness that literally defied death. She made mistakes, and she made things better. My personal favorite? When a bunch of crusty dudes told her the world was a certain way, she threw a sword and told them to rethink their hypothesis.
So yeah: If and when a new vampire slayer is called, I’m ready to join the patrol. Hulu, when the series order comes down, beep me.
