Yahoo Lifestyle “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” Is Reportedly Getting A New Revival Series With Sarah Michelle Gellar Set To Return, So Here’s Absolutely Everything We Know So Far
It’s a big day for Buffy fans!
Over two decades after the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer hit our screens, it has now been reported that an official revival is underway at Hulu!
The fan-favorite supernatural series aired for seven seasons across The WB and UPN, starring the iconic Sarah Michelle Gellar as the leading character Buffy Summers.
According to Deadline, a follow-up series centering a new chapter in the Buffyverse is “nearing a pilot order” from Hulu. Here are all the (reported) details that we have so far.
Firstly, Deadline reports that Sarah is set to reprise her role in the revival. However, sources note that Buffy Summers will not be the main character of the series, with the project focusing on a new, younger Slayer.
Sarah’s apparent return to the Buffyverse comes just months after she expressed an interest in reviving the series — something she’d famously been against for years prior.
“It’s funny, I always used to say no because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” she said in December 2024. “But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
Elsewhere, Deadline reports that the pilot of the new Buffy series is set to be directed by Chloé Zhao (Eternals) and written by Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face).
What’s more, Dolly Parton — whose production company, Sandollar, produced the original Buffy series — will reportedly be the executive producer of the upcoming pilot.
It’s not yet clear whether any other ex-Buffy cast members would return, though sources purportedly note that it’s “likely.”
Deadline also reports that OG Buffy creator* Joss Whedon, who has been accused of allegedly fostering a “toxic work environment” on the Buffy set by ex-cast members, will have no involvement in the upcoming revival.
*Joss wrote the 1992 movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which the series was based on. In recent years, he has faced a string of allegations of “abusive” and “unprofessional” behavior on the sets of various Hollywood projects.
Reacting to the news on X, several longtime Buffy fans have expressed both excitement and concern around the new revival, with many admitting that they fear it won’t live up to how great the OG series was from start to finish.
