Searches for pearl engagement rings have reportedly surged by 5,000 per cent on Google since Bridgerton's latest series landed on Netflix, which saw its heroine, Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan), proposed to with an unusual pearl style. Pandora UK's jewellery expert Emma Fox is now predicting that pearl engagement rings will be a significant summer trend, inspired by the much-loved character.

Pearls have long been cherished for their beauty, and were once considered to be the tears of the gods. Naturally found within living molluscs (usually oysters, but occasionally clams and mussels too), they are associated with purity, but require a lot of upkeep: they are famously meant to be the last thing you put on, and the first you remove.
In recent years, a handful of notable A-listers have debuted pearl and diamond engagement rings, including Michelle Williams, Emma Stone and Ariana Grande (whose ring was reportedly made from her grandmother's pearls, and cost over $300,000). Historically, the American socialite Barbara Hutton had a black pearl engagement ring, while the Queen Mother swapped her huge sapphire engagement ring for a pearl one, which she wore in its place for much of her life.
Though they've not been a mainstream choice for brides, it's easy to see why more and more are opting for the style, which offers a more sustainable alternative to diamonds. For many modern brides, there is undoubtedly also a desire to avoid tired wedding stereotypes, so the pearl ring is an easy way to stand out from the crowd.
