Brandy’s Cinderella is back and nearly beheaded in “Descendants: The Rise of Red ”trailer

Her 'Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella’ costar Paolo Montalban is also reprising his role.

The Descendants universe is welcoming a new generation of heroes — with a little help from some familiar fairy tale faces.

Five years after its last entry, the musical film franchise about the children of iconic Disney characters is back with Descendants: The Rise of Red. The newest Villain Kid is Red (Kylie Cantrall) the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora) who is set down an unexpected path after her tyrannical mother leads a coup in Auradon. Her mother's actions leave Red no choice but to join forces with Chloe (Malia Baker), the perfectionist daughter of Cinderella and the now-King Charming.

This is where a blast from the past comes in: the royals are none other than Brandy and Paolo Montalban, reprising their roles as Cinderella and Prince Charming from 1997’s Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.

The newest trailer for the film sees Cinderella standing her ground against the Queen of Hearts, even after her takeover. "I will never kneel to a tyrant," she declares, leading the villain to take drastic measures.

“Off with her head!” the Queen of Heart yells, to the shock of our young protagonists.

In an effort to save both of their mothers from this dark path, the daughters must travel back in time to undo the traumatic event that set Red’s mother down her villainous path.

While Rise of Red is not a direct continuation of the 1997 movie, Brandy and Montalban still get to play out a future for the beloved fairy tale icons, long after their happily ever after. Brandy previously told Entertainment Weekly that she "immediately said yes" when offered the chance to return as Cinderella.

"I loved working with Paolo when I was younger, and working with him again has been amazing," she said of the royal reunion. "I was so excited to put on the dress, to put on the crown, to put on the blue hair. It was so amazing to do that and to get that feeling of, 'Wow, this is the '90s all over again.'"

Of the difference between the old and new iteration of the characters, she added, "They just are more in love, and they talk about their love with their daughter and whoever wants to listen. They've been in love for so long and they still waltz, they still sing together. They still have that magic."

Brandy’s onscreen daughter also gushed about the experience of working with the singer — and seeing her make a grand entrance into the Descendants world.

“My jaw dropped the first time I saw her at the castle we shot at," Baker told EW. "It was such an honor playing her daughter and getting to see the blue hair that runs in the family."
