Ben Affleck Makes His Big-Screen Return in First Look at Action Sequel “The Accountant 2”

The sequel to 2016’s ‘The Accountant’ brings back Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons and Cynthia Addai-Robinson

Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are back for another action-packed mission.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Amazon MGM Studios debuted the first look at Affleck, 52, and Bernthal, 48, in The Accountant 2, a sequel to their 2016 action film The Accountant.

Christian Wolff (Affleck) is "brought out of hiding by Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) after someone close to them is killed by unknown assassins," according to a synopsis. "To solve the murder, Wolff must recruit the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax (Bernthal)."

J. K. Simmons also reprises his role as Ray King, director of the Treasury department's financial crimes bureau

The film will have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 8, then it'll be in theaters April 25.

Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, Jean Smart and John Lithgow, who all appeared in the first film, will not reprise their roles here. The original film followed Christian's upbringing and his estrangement from Brax as they grow up. Bernthal appears as a hitman throughout the movie and is revealed to be Christian's brother as an adult in its climax.

Both The Accountant and its new sequel were directed by Gavin O'Connor and written by Bill Dubuque. Affleck produced the movie with his longtime collaborator Matt Damon through their production company Artists Equity, which has made movies like 2023's Air, Jennifer Lopez documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told and her latest movie Unstoppable and the Damon and Casey Affleck heist-comedy The Instigators.

Affleck filmed the new movie in the spring of 2024 as reports began emerging about troubles in his marriage to Lopez, 55. Lopez eventually filed for divorce from Affleck in August 2024, ending their two years-long marriage. They finalized their divorce by Jan. 6.

The Accountant 2 is in theaters April 25.
