'Back to the Future' shoes are real – and you can actually get a pair

It seemed like something too crazy to even contemplate when Michael J. Fox aka Marty McFly put on those self-lacing shoes in the movie Back to the Future.

But it seems we’re finally in the future, with Nike revealing they’ve created real life Nike Mags – and they’re raffling 89 of them off for charity.

This isn’t the first time these shoes have hit the news. Nike gifted a pair to Michael J. Fox last year, but this is the first chance the general public have had to own these insane light-up, lace-up sneakers.

In a video posted to Instagram by user fashionpassionjunkie, the shoes are seen in action, with the laces automatically adjusting to the wearer's foot.

Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator at Nike reveals the design team wanted to get “as close to the vision from 1989 as possible”, with a sensor in the shoe detecting your foot.

“When the foot hits the foot bed, the adaptive lacing adjusts the cabling system to a comfortable level around the foot," explains Tiffany.

"From there you can adjust for a tighter or looser fit using the plus or minus panel on the collar of the shoe." The shoes adjust to your unique foot shape to give you the best fit possible.”

These bad boys will also need a battery charge as well. With the built in battery taking about three hours to completely power up, having the lights on will see your shoes last four hours, or about a week without.

The draw starts today and ends October 11 so you better start buying tickets here if you’re keen for these kicks.
