Bachelor star Matty J calls out 'sexism' in Australian media: 'Do better'
Former Bachelor Matty ‘J’ Johnson has called out the sexism women face in Australian media, saying he thinks “we can do better”.
The 34-year-old took to social media on Friday to criticise a specific news headline about his wife Laura Byrne and friend Brittany Hockley, who host the very popular podcast, Life Uncut.
The duo won the Listeners Choice award at the Australian Podcast Awards this week, although Matty was displeased with how it had been covered in the media.
He shared a video online pointing out the headline: ‘Life Uncut stars Laura Byrne and Brittany Hockley get upstaged by a very handsome Matty J at the Australian Podcast Awards’.
“Initially, I was quite flattered, especially because it’s a pretty shit photo of me,” he began.

“But then I thought, what a shame. This came out just after the girls had won the People’s Choice award for the most popular podcast in all of Australia.
"What an incredible achievement, and yet, this is the headline they get. I just think it was a perfect example of the sexism that women have to face by Australian media, and I just think we can do better.”
A number of Matty’s followers quickly took to the comments to commend the video, which had been captioned on TikTok: “Cmon - give credit where credit is due!”
“SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK,” one person wrote, followed by another who added, “Love ya Matty J! You are one of the best”.
“You are spot on! Thank you so much for making a point about this!” someone else said.
After one user suggested that “maybe they’re just trying to include you”, Matty responded, “Was happy not to get a slice of this pie”.
On Instagram, Matty’s video was also met with applause from a number of famous stars including The Bachelor’s Sam Frost and Helena Sauzier, as well as SAS Australia’s Erin Holland and Lisa Origliasso from The Veronicas.
“This was wildly disappointing. I ALSO WORE LINEN…” Laura commented.
“Awwww Matty. Thank you. You’re a gem. Honestly what does a woman have to do these days to get just an ounce or credit or acknowledgment for their work!” Brittany replied. “But I mean, you did wear that linen suit well.”
Laura and Brittany, who also won the fan-voted Listeners Choice award last year, both shared gushing posts on Instagram following their huge accomplishment on Thursday night.
“Thank you to all of you who voted, I feel so lucky to have all of you, cheering us on, listening to the pod, giving your feedback so we can continue to grow and learn,” Laura wrote.
“Cannot thank you guys enough for backing us, laughing with us, crying with us and supporting us from the beginning. We have such an amazing little community and that’s the best part! We love you,” Brittany shared.
