Aussies divided over 'crazy' sight in Bunnings aisle: 'It's ridiculous'
Is it too early to start seeing these products in store? Many Bunnings fans think so.
Christmas is over 100 days away, but Bunnings Warehouse has already kickstarted the holiday season by creating festive displays in stores. Their decision has stirred up debate online, with many people wondering if the retailer has gone too far.
Much like the hot cross bun controversy – when supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths started to sell the Easter treat in December – some customers are sick of seasonal displays appearing at the wrong times. But could it actually be a blessing in disguise for those who want to get their Christmas preparations started in advance?
One customer shared a few photos of Bunnings’ Christmas display on a popular Facebook group, noting that it seemed like “a very early start this year”. The retailer is selling a range of items, including outdoor reindeer decor, an array of colourful baubles, cute Christmas character lights and more.

They’re not the only retailer to start selling Christmas items either, with another shopper noting their local Big W had Christmas stock on the shelves in late August.
Some shoppers were shocked by the retailer’s decision and took to Facebook to share their opinions.
“This is totally taking away the magic of December and Christmas. Before long they are going to have them out in June!!” one person wrote.
“This is crazy,” another agreed.
“Christmas decorations will be like hot cross buns soon all year round,” a third remarked.
“This is ridiculous already,” another scoffed.
Shoppers defend Bunnings over controversial Christmas decision
However, many customers were glad Bunnings is selling Christmas items this early in the year, as it gives them time to prepare for the busy festive season.
“Better this way, you can add bits and pieces every week and not drop $$$ so close to Christmas,” one shopper pointed out.
“Probably because their stuff always sells out super quickly and then everyone complains they have none in stock of what they [have] seen [on] TikTok or whatever, so they are feeding the masses,” another added.
“It’s partially driven by customer demand. Halloween is next month and people are working out now what they’re buying when decorating their houses for both Halloween and Christmas, they’re just trying to get some of that market,” a third chimed in.
“Last year [Big W started] mid-August. Not early for us who do big light displays. Setting up will begin soon to be done in time for December 1st,” another added.
“Every year people wonder why Christmas stuff is out so early. Gives people the chance to save money and buy [more] later. Shops stock this stuff early because people buy it! Hardly any will be left by December,” remarked a shopper.

Other shoppers raised the point that retailers simply follow timelines that have become standard across Australia.
“Retail timelines are [the] day after Father’s Day, Christmas [stock appears]. Same as Easter, last Christmas load [means] the first Easter stock [will] be put out on Boxing Day,” one person explained.
“Every September we bring all Christmas stock out, been this way longer than I’ve worked at Bunnings lol,” another agreed.
