Aussie TikTok star terrifies fans with spider video: 'I started screaming'

Tilly Oddy-Black speaks to Yahoo Lifestyle about her eight-legged co-star.

Australia is known for its wildlife with anything from kangaroos jumping down the streets, to pythons having adult cuddles in roofs but now its seems spiders are becoming our new housemates.

Sydney-based TikTok star Tilly Oddy-Black took her relationship with an eight-legged house intruder to a new level in a recent viral video. The 27-year-old actor introduced Goldie, a golden orb spider to the rules of living in a share house and their newfound friendship confirming to Americans that Australia really is just a country full of big spiders.

The first hilarious video - which has amassed more than 450k likes on Instagram - pokes fun at Aussies and how we're perceived by Americans with wildlife usually being part of our homes and lives. Tilly captions the video 'I pay him rent' with Goldie being called out for having long showers, greeting Tilly as she wakes up and sampling some of Tilly's cooking.

A subsequent video of the unlikely duo shows them enjoying a cuppa and some gossip as well as sitting down to a lovely meal (consisting of a single fly) together.

'I have so many questions'

The video has triggered many people who don't call Australia home, with most confirming it's exactly what they think of the land down under.

One user commented: "The fact that there were enough spider interactions to make this video confirms everything we assume". Another said: "I'm not American but you're literally proving their belief (and mine)".

Another person called the skit out for being fake due to the size of the golden orb, "Fake video," they joked. "The spider would be 20 times that size and it would have multiple babies on its back."

'We couldn't have asked for better talent'

Tilly spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle about Goldie and their special relationship and confirmed the golden orb had been hanging around for quite awhile.

"The spider has been living in our yard for a while and eventually made its way into the house so we thought why not have some fun with our new friend? I've sent him my BSB (bank state branch) number and waiting for him to transfer this month's rent," she said.

Tilly said that despite not being a paid actor, Goldie was pretty easy to coax into the house to become a TikTok star. While some people have raised questions over how she got a wild spider to cooperate, she said a big part of her success was giving it treats throughout the day. She stopped short of calling herself a spider whisperer, however, instead praising the golden orb for its ability to adapt to its new surroundings.

"There isn't really a secret to how we did it to be honest. My boyfriend helped to film and it was just lots and lots of takes of different scenes, so there wasn't much coaxing to get him to do what we wanted. Goldie had weaved a web on a Tupperware container and it just went from there. It was the perfect little puppet in the end."

When it comes to living with him long term though, it's not something the full-time content creator has considered.

"Not sure if we'll let him stay long term. After we finished filming our video we put him back in his natural habitat. Can you imagine him going back to his friends? None of them would believe him!"

Wildlife makes itself at home

It's not the first time a critter has made itself at home at the Tilly household with the Aussie laughing about an incident with a possum just a few months ago.

"I walked out into the kitchen a few months ago and there was a possum just on the stove sitting on a frying pan. We'd left the window open so he'd walked in and onto the kitchen bench," she said.

"I started screaming and freaked out and then he freaked out and ran as far away as he could."

The content creator said it's been incredible to see just how much the video resonated online with viewers because many do believe Australia is just one big country, full of hairy spiders and 20 babies on their backs.
