Aubrey Plaza shares her rules for filming a movie: 'Don't ever wear underwear'
"Get whatever fluids out," Plaza advises. "Be like an empty vessel.… If you don't wear underwear, it can come out faster."
With nearly two decades in the entertainment industry, Aubrey Plaza has an abundance of wisdom to share with young performers. One of her best pieces of advice: Always go commando.
In a new video with Entertainment Weekly, the Parks and Recreation actor sits down with her My Old Ass costar Maisy Stella to reflect on what she's learned from her vast experience on sets. Unfortunately for Plaza, sitting down wasn't quite as comfortable as expected.
In the middle of a response about finding a rhythm while working with an ensemble, Plaza shifts in her chair. "I'm on fire," she says. "Why is this happening? I honestly don't know if I'm having an allergic reaction or something, to this chair. Is it just me? I don't know."
The discomfort seems real, until she drops a reference to her new movie. "It's fine, I think it's just my old ass," Plaza says in her signature deadpan tone. "Maybe I should've worn underwear, but I never do. And then I get f---ed."
"Always wear underwear," Plaza advises, in case you're feeling bold one day and "you think, you know, I dunno, It'd be fun not to." Although she second-guesses this advice when the topic of underwear reemerges later in the conversation.
"I feel like acting is all about, you have to have your body in this weird malleable state," Plaza explains. "Never have to pee when you're doing a scene. Even if you a little bit are like, 'Maybe I have to pee,' just get it all out. Just get whatever fluids out. Be like an empty vessel.… If you don't wear underwear, it can come out faster. So don't ever wear underwear in life."
Since everything Plaza says sounds completely serious, it's tough to definitively ascertain her genuine position on underwear. You'll have to make your own judgments when you watch the video above.
Elsewhere in the video, Plaza discusses finding chemistry with on-screen costars. "You kinda can feel when someone's just open," she says. "I think when people are able to be vulnerable right away, I feel like that's always a good sign. When you're about to do a movie or something with someone, it's like you're jumping off a cliff together, so I think it's good to start it off by being like, 'I got your back.'"
However, Plaza also notes that chemistry isn't always immediately clear on set. "It's weird, because sometimes you think you don't have chemistry with someone," she says. "You're like 'Ugh, I don't really like this person,' or 'This person's really driving me crazy' and then you watch the movie and you're like 'Well, it really looks like they're in love with each other' or whatever it is."

Plaza's key to maintaining chemistry: Remain laser-focused on one good quality in a scene partner. "Even if there's something bothering me or irking me or something, I try to find one thing to hang onto or focus on," she says. "At the end of the day, you gotta make it work."
My Old Ass is now playing in theaters. Plaza also stars in Agatha All Along, which is now streaming on Disney+. She also will appear in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, which hits theaters next week.
