Yahoo Lifestyle Ariana Grande Has Responded To Viral Speculation That She Is Secretly “Campaigning” To Play Audrey Hepburn In A Biopic
As you are probably aware, Ariana Grande recently returned to her acting roots with a critically acclaimed performance in Wicked, which was released in November.
The star plays Glinda in the movie version of the 2003 stage show — which is, in turn, an adaptation of the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Ariana has been widely praised for the role, and even earned prestigious Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for it.
Prior to being cast, Ariana — who was arguably better known for her music career before this movie came along — made no secret of her desire to play Glinda on the silver screen one day.
Over the years, she repeatedly shared her dream in interviews and social media posts, and didn’t even try to play it cool when she was in the process of auditioning for the role.
In subsequent interviews, both Ari and the movie’s director, Jon M. Chu, revealed that she was always early for her auditions, and trained daily to prove to producers that she could handle the part.
She even made a conscious effort to wear Glinda’s trademark color, pink, at her auditions.
And after ticking off her dream role of Glinda, fans recently started to speculate that Ariana had set her sights on another prestigious movie role.
In recent months, several tweets claiming that Ariana is “campaigning” to play beloved Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn in a biopic have gone viral, with many people drawing parallels between Audrey’s distinctive look and Ariana’s fashion, hair, and makeup choices.
The speculation ramped up a gear last week when Ariana wore a strapless Louis Vuitton ballgown to the 36th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards, with her hair styled into a bun with short, swooping side bangs.
Sharing photos of Ariana from the night, one viral tweet reads: “her subtly campaigning for that audrey hepburn role….i see you ariana.”
“I may be completely delusional, but Ariana is obviously subtly campaigning to play Audrey Hepburn in the biopic that is already written. Her dresses and hair have all given her a nod. Walk with me here. The hair is in a bun for a reason!” another popular tweet added, comparing photos of Ari with Audrey.
And this narrative was fueled at Sunday’s Golden Globes, when Ariana wore a pale yellow Givenchy gown circa 1966 to the ceremony, and once again showed off her distinctive new bangs.
Notably, Givenchy was Audrey's fashion house of choice throughout her career, and from 1956, she even had a contract that stipulated she would be dressed by Givenchy in all contemporary-set movies.
However, Ariana has now explicitly shut down this speculation — and insisted that she has no idea where it has even stemmed from.
When speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, Ariana was asked about her subtle nods to Audrey in her latest looks, with the star replying: “I love the '50s, '60s glamour, that’s just kind of my favorite — Marilyn, Audrey, it’s just my favorite.”
And when asked if she was going to “manifest” the Audrey role in the same way that she manifested Glinda, Ariana seemed shocked. She said: “Oh my goodness, oh my goodness. I have no idea.”
“That would have to be done so well and so perfectly and have to be the… I don’t know,” she went on. “No way that I could.”
Responding to somebody else saying that she could do the role justice, Ariana remained humble as she said: “That’s very kind.”
Ariana was asked a similar question in a separate interview with Access Hollywood that same night, forcing her to ask: “Oh my goodness, why is everyone asking me this?”
“You’re insane,” she added in relation to the reporter believing she could play Audrey. “You're insane, you're insane, you're insane. You're insane. I love you."
While there have been rumors of an Audrey biopic being in the works for many years, there hasn’t been any significant progress with it actually getting made.
Rooney Mara was previously lined up to play Audrey in a Luca Guadagnino project about the icon, but in February 2024, Rooney revealed that Luca is no longer attached to the production.
“The project is not completely dead,” she added at the time. “Luca is no longer going to be directing it, but the project is still very much alive… I can’t say more than that right now.”
However, there have been no further updates since these comments were made.
