When it comes to bargain hunting, sometimes you find gems, and other times, well, you might just find...germs. One Aldi shopper took to a popular Facebook group to share a photo of a chicken breast that looked... less than appetising. The post quickly went viral, drawing a flurry of hilarious, concerned, and downright horrified comments from fellow group members.

The original poster asked, "Is this still OK to eat? It had no smell," while clarifying that the chicken was still within its expiry date. The question unleashed a storm of responses.

"It's a no from me," one person quickly shot back, summing up the general sentiment.

Another commenter quipped, "I got food poisoning just looking at this."

Some couldn't resist the opportunity for humour. "Depends if you're looking for an excuse to get out of something lol," one cheeky user responded.

Others were more blunt in their advice: "If you want salmonella, go for it."

The thread continued with more strong opinions. "If in doubt, throw it out," one person advised, echoing the age-old food safety mantra.

"Clearly that's vile. It's like mouldy! I can't believe someone could even question that," another user wrote, expressing disbelief that the chicken's edibility was even up for debate.

"No way that doesn't have a stench," one person insisted, while another dramatically added, "I can smell it from here."

The visual impact of the chicken breast was enough to turn stomachs. "They look rank. That's an express lane to the ER," one user warned.

Criticism of Aldi's meat quality was also a common theme. "I wouldn't trust ALDI used by dates, especially if it looks like this. I'm over buying meat from Aldi. Too many times lately it has been off well before use by for me," one person lamented.

Another shopper agreed, sharing their own experience: "I don't buy meat from Aldi anymore because almost everything I bought went off well before the used-by date."

One of the most direct pieces of advice came with some financial wisdom: "Hell no. Return for a refund."

And, in case anyone was still unsure, another user drove the point home: "You might actually die from that."

According to food scientist and nutrition researcher Dr. Vincent however, despite the popular consensus, from a scientific standpoint this chicken breast is probably OK to eat.

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, Dr. Vincent explained, "It looks like the product had some level of discolouration, which could be caused by 'bruising' during the mechanical processing of the chicken or being stored at too low a temperature – not quite freezer burn, but similar."

He continued, "Chicken has a very distinctive smell when it goes bad, along with a slimy and tacky texture. So if the product is within the use-by date and has been stored properly, it should be safe."

However, Dr. Vincent did clarify, "That's me wearing my food scientist hat, but personally, when it comes to chicken, I always say follow your instinct. If you are not sure, don’t risk it."
