In these uncertain times where many of us are feeling the pinch yet not wanting to completely give up luxuries, dupes are like little life rafts in a sea of depressing financial worry. Let's face it, when those cost of living issues come knocking, it's often simple pleasures like skin and hair care and makeup that get the chop first.

That's where places like Kmart and Aldi come to the rescue with their affordable versions of everything from expensive activewear to perfume and skincare. While Kmart has been praised for its “amazing” dupes of brands like Sol de Janeiro and Korean cult-buy Glow Recipe, Aldi has officially entered the chat with its Lacura range that many customers say is just as good as its more expensive counterparts.

One customer recently took to an ALDI fans Facebook group to ask advice on the range and while the reviews were mixed, there were plenty of shoppers who swear by the affordable range.

"Hey guys," the poster wrote. "Need feedback are these products good? Thanks in advance."

Included in the photo were the Lacura Renew Q10 serum, day and night creams and the Revitalising Face Cleanser - the latter of which sells for just $5.99. Judging by the comments, the cleanser is a clear fan favourite.

“I love their Lacura products,” one person wrote. “I only ever use their foam cleanser (pink one). I love the serums & day & night creams too. A few years ago the Lacura face care range came out on top of ALL face care brands in England!”

"I use the cleanser in the pink bottle for sensitive skin it is lovely on my dry skin, the day and night creams are very nice too," another said.

"I get those face washes all the time- they’re great," a second person added.

Plenty of other people also expressed appreciation for the foam cleanser with several shoppers saying they loved it, had been using it for years and had never had a problem with it.

The moisturisers also got the thumbs up from many Aldi shoppers with one fan writing, "I’ve used the q10 anti-wrinkle cream for years it fantastic and no it doesn’t burn at all great product 100%."

"I have the Lacura blue box day and night cream - they’re great," added another person.

"I’ve never had an issue with any Lacura product. I use their stuff every day," a third person said.

Of course, every person's skin is different and so there were also customers who shared their less-than-ideal experiences with the Lacura range.

"My skin reacted terribly to the cleanser (dry scaly rash that burned!)," someone said. "I love the serum, light but hydrating. I haven’t used the creams for a few years as I didn’t like the smell but will be going back to them shortly due to cost-saving."

"Don’t like the foam cleanser, I have oily skin and my face feels like it had Botox after I’ve washed it and dry. Even when I apply my moisturiser afterwards," a different customer weighed in.

"I have sensitive skin they made my face red and irritated.. didn’t work for me, but worked perfectly fine for my friend," said another.

"I got one of the anti-aging creams and it burned - never again," someone else shared.

"Burnt my face and gave me blisters," added another.

"The foaming cleanser made me break out in a really bad rash!" yet another said.

So, apart from the price, how different are they and are these products still beneficial for your skin? Well, the answer is not so straightforward. There are a lot of elements to unpack, from skin type to how products are formulated.

Doctor Shreya Andric, Principal Dermatologist at Northern Sydney Dermatology and Laser, says it also depends on the type of product.

“For cleansers and moisturisers I usually advocate for basic products as they are less likely to contain fragrances and other potentially irritating ingredients,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“When it comes to active ingredients, sometimes more expensive products are better.

“For example, some more expensive vitamin C serums have superior, more stable formulations with ideal concentrations. Budget products can sometimes sacrifice these things.”
