Alamo Drafthouse is ready to serve a few ghoulish delights.
PEOPLE can exclusively reveal Alamo Drafthouse's upcoming special menu for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ahead of its anticipated release in theaters. To celebrate the sequel, the nationwide movie theater chain, known for serving food and drinks during screenings, has prepared three new menu items inspired by the flick. They will be available in all 35 locations beginning Monday, Sept. 2.
Alamo Drafthouse executive chef Brad Sorenson tells PEOPLE that he felt initial excitement when he was tasked with building a menu for the popular Tim Burton movie, citing his love for actor Michael Keaton, who played the titular character in the 1988 comedy flick and is reprising his role in the sequel.
Until he realized: "Okay, so it's a movie about sandworms and dead people and disembodiment? And, okay, food? Where do we go with that?"
But being 10 years into the job, Sorenson was up for the challenge.
"Each film presents itself in a different way,” he explains, pointing to some of the theater’s past special menus for Black Panther and Parasite, which drew inspiration from the movies' regions. "With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, we wanted to present a menu that was well rounded in some categories. We always try to keep in mind what categories we're hitting with the different menu offerings. We wanted to pay homage to the original without leaning too heavy into one particular theme."

Sorenson continues, "With this menu, quite frankly, where it started was that iconic dinner scenefrom the first Beetlejuice. Not the food they were eating, but the song they were singing. It is set to Harry Belafonte singing 'Day-O' – the 'Banana Boat' song."
Thus came the creation of the Tally Me Banana Pudding, one of the three inventive menu offerings on the special menu, alongside the Beetlewings Beetlewings and the Sandwich for the Recently Deceased. For the movie, the theater will also offer a limited edition popcorn bucket in the design of the iconic black-and-white sandworm — sharp teeth and all.
"I have to admit, we went a little more thematic," says Sorenson. "I went a little Burton-esque with the rest of the menu. It really did originate with that song and then tying in our Texas Southern Heritage as a company.
From there, Sorenson "started playing" with the cinematography of Burton’s classic works.
"He's got a knack for the quasi grotesque. He's got a knack for being a little bit dark. But one of the things I love about his films is his use of color tones… And so we were wondering if we could use a color as an underlying tone to tie the whole menu together," the chef shares. "I'm not comparing what we do to Tim Burton's brilliance, but we decided to use that yellow from the banana pudding to be a guide for the rest of the menu."
After that, it all came down to enriching the flavors and adding more Easter eggs for movie fans. For instance, the pulled pork sandwich on the special menu first started out as a fried chicken sandwich, which lead the team to develop a mustard barbecue sauce to play into the yellow theme, however a glaring characteristic from the movie pulled them in a new direction.

"There are a lot of tattered and shredded physical elements about Beetlejuice. Suit falling apart, body falling apart. And so as soon as we started thinking about a shredded element, it led us to testing out that barbecue sauce with a pulled pork and a more elegant way to serve shredded food,” says Sorenson. "It started snowballing from there, where we took the yellow theme, we took this tattered, shredded thing, and it turned into this pulled pork sandwich, which we are extremely happy with. I'm really excited to dip our toes into that style sandwich. We haven't done anything like that before… It'll be a fun new angle to see how our guests respond to it."
Ahead of the launch of the new menu, PEOPLE asked Sorenson to break down the three menu items and share what guests can expect when they go in for their first bite.
Beetlewings Beetlewings
No bugs were harmed in the making of this dish! They are lemon pepper chicken wings made with coriander and dill seed served with a side of ranch and celery. "You're going to still get your citric, salty lemon pepper, but then you're going to get a little bit more herbal depth behind them," says Sorenson. "Really, it started as us mashing together lemon pepper and Montreal steak seasoning and then taking the elements from both that we were in love with and creating our own custom blend."
Sandwich for the Recently Deceased
The sandwich offering is a beer-braised pulled pork with mustard barbecue sauce, pickles, pickled red onion and a toasted bun, served with a side of french fries and ketchup. "At each location, we are braising pork butts in beer and seasoning. We are a drafthouse, after all," Sorenson tells PEOPLE. "The mustard barbecue sauce is what I think really takes it over the edge."
Tally Me Banana Pudding
Banana pudding is a delicacy in some regions – and Sorenson knows it. "We have multiple layers of deliciousness, while not f'ing with tradition too much. Banana pudding you can't f' around, or else you'll find out, especially in the south," the chef says. "So we have multiple layers of delicious ingredients, vanilla wafers, a pudding, a banana cream pudding that is made in house, along with sliced bananas that are layered and then topped with whipped cream and extra crunchy vanilla wafers to finish it off. It's going to seem traditional, because certain things you don't get too chef-y with."
Alamo Drafthouse launches the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice special menu on Sept. 2, ahead of the movie's theatrical release on Sept. 6.
