Film Club has commenced filming in Manchester and will air next year on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three and later on ZDFneo in Germany. Gaumont UK is producing, with Fremantle handling international sales. Show was first announced back in February.

Plot follows Evie (Wood), who hasn’t left her home in six months after a ‘wobble’. She runs a film club in her garage as an escape with her best friend Noa (Rizwan) and whoever else turns up. However, Noa reveals he has a new job that will take him to the other side of the country, forcing them to decide if they are more than friends.

Evie also has to handle her eccentric family, which comprises fiercely loving single mum Suz (Jones), sister Izzie (Hill), and handsome boyfriend/sometime man of the house Josh (Long). Co-creator Davis plays Dominic, Film Club’s newest member.

The series marks the latest show for Wood. Last month, we revealed the BBC has ordered a second season of Daddy Issues, which she stars in alongside David Morrissey. She has also been cast in Season 3 of The White Lotus for HBO and is also set to star in Carl Tibbetts’ crime-thriller Sweet Dreams opposite Nick Frost, Paapa Essiedu, Niamh Algar and Billy Howle.

Wood said: “I’m thrilled that our beloved TV series Film Club, a project that Ralph and I have been writing for the past decade, starts shooting this week. We couldn’t be more excited, and grateful, to the incredible team we have assembled with the BBC. To bring this to life with Nabhaan and Suranne, two exceptional actors I have always admired, is a real honour.”

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, added: “We’re so happy to welcome Nabhaan, Suranne and this incredibly exciting cast. Aimee and Ralph’s heartwarming, feel-good and utterly charming scripts have made Film Club a hot ticket for BBC viewers and we can’t wait for it to arrive on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three next year.”

Salt commissioned Film Club (6×30) along with Fiona Campbell, Controller Youth Audience, BBC Three and BBC iPlayer. Anna Jordan (One Day, Killing Eve) is part of the writing team for episode four. Gaumont UK is producing with with the support of Germany’s ZDFneo.

Stella Merz (Gentleman Jack, Renegade Nell) is producer and Catherine Morshead (Daddy Issues, The Full Monty) will direct the series. Executive producers are Wood, Alison Jackson and Jamie Jackson for Gaumont, and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC.
