Abbie Chatfield calls out reality TV boxing matches: 'What's the deal'

Abbie Chatfield has spoken out about celebrity boxing matches and questioned why so many Australian reality TV stars participate in them.

It’s become a growing trend in recent years for contestants on reality shows to go head to head in a boxing match, with Married At First Sight stars Brent Vitiello and Daniel Holmes headlining an event in Melbourne this weekend.

Taking to her Instagram Story on Friday evening, the radio host asked her followers to explain the phenomenon and suggested that there might be an underlying reason.

“I’m being completely f**king serious right now,” she began.

“I need someone to explain to me the reason behind the pipeline from man on reality TV to ‘celebrity’ boxing match. What’s the deal there? What’s going on?”

Abbie went on to point out that reality TV stars seem to be the only people in the Australian entertainment industry that participate in the sport.

“How come they’re the only public figures that do it?” she asked, repeating the term ‘public figures’ to add air quotes.

“There’s no like, DJs that do it or musicians that do it. Like, it’s only people from reality TV. Why? Is it an MLM (multi-level marketing)? Are they recruiting each other? What is it?”

‘Pretty clear’

In a follow-up post, Abbie shared a screenshot of a message she had received from a follower asking her about her own career trajectory.

“People [are] not getting the joke/actual question,” she said.

“‘Didn’t you go from reality TV to I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’. Yeah, the pipeline from reality TV to reality TV is pretty clear. You’re doing reality TV.

“It’s like saying to someone, ‘Um, you worked at Ray White and now you work at LJ Hooker, like, what the f**k?’. Yeah, that’s what I work in. I’m wondering how they get to boxing, that’s my question.”

‘Test of your manhood’

Abbie’s comments come shortly after MAFS star Jackson Lonie, who is also set to compete at this weekend’s Team Ellis celebrity boxing event, spoke with Yahoo Lifestyle about why he decided to sign up for the match.

“Boxing is something that I've wanted to do for a long time because when you get in that ring, it's just you and your opponent. There's nobody else to save you, it’s literally just the two of you,” he said.

“I don't know how to put this, but it's a test of your manhood in a way as well - or womanhood if a woman steps in as well. It's a big thing and like I said, there's no one there to save you, there’s no safety net. It's just how far you’re willing to push yourself.”

Jackson will also be donating his portion of the event’s ticket sales to Coast Shelter, a community housing operator providing accommodation for people who are homeless or experiencing domestic and family violence on the Central Coast.
