After 3 months of memes, Charli XCX declares the end of 'Brat Summer'

"Goodbye forever brat summer," she wrote on social media.

And just like that, after three months of memes and TikTok dances, "Brat Summer" is officially over — or so says Charli XCX, chancellor of all things "brat."

In separate posts on her social media accounts on Monday, the singer declared, "Goodbye forever brat summer." On her Instagram account, Charli shared a carousel of videos soundtracked to Brat songs alongside the declaration.

The internet phenomenon took off in earnest in June with the release of the singer's sixth studio album Brat, which featured a now-famous lime green cover with the title in all lowercase. The unique aesthetic took off like wildfire, particularly on TikTok.

Charli XCX herself explained the meaning of the word "brat" in a TikTok video.

“You’re just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like, parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat,” she said in the video.

Then, Brat cemented its place in the summer zeitgeist when President Joe Biden announced he was stepping down from the 2024 presidential election, and Charli XCX expressed her support for Vice President Kamala Harris by tweeting, "Kamala IS brat."

That tweet, which to date has over 55 million views, then inspired countless TikToks, social media posts, and explainers on cable news networks. Naturally, Harris' campaign quickly co-opted the aesthetic and changed their social media banners to mimic the Brat album cover art.

The Kamala HQ Instagram page, which regularly shares memes, used the "Brat" look to declare, "Welcome to Kamala HQ. This is the official rapid response page of Vice President Harris' presidential campaign." The post also included a screengrab of Charli XCX's tweet about Harris, and featured the caption, "And when we put this to bed the internet will go crazy."

Former President Barack Obama also enjoyed a Brat Summer. He listed "365," the last song on Brat, on his summer playlist that was shared on social media Aug. 12. "It wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix," he wrote.

Charli XCX's new declaration follows previous speculation that the trend was waning, which she denied in an Instagram post on July 25. Sharing headlines from various outlets declaring the trend dead, Charli cheekily captioned her post at that time, "oh ? see u next week :)"

The singer now seems to have changed her mind after Labor Day weekend, a holiday that unofficially marks the end of summer. (The season, however, lasts through Sept. 22.)

But, who knows, maybe "Brat Summer" could pave the way for "Brat Autumn." Stranger memes have happened, after all.
