1923 Season 2 Burning Question: Is a Baby on the Way for Spencer and Alex? Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer Tell Us What They Can
The start of 1923‘s upcoming second season would be a highly inopportune time for Alex and Spencer to learn that they’re going to be parents… but we’ve got a strong suspicion that that’s exactly what might happen.
Important to acknowledge: We have no official knowledge that a new little Dutton is on the way. We just have years of watching TV shows, as well as a basic understanding of human reproduction, under our belts. So with that in mind, let’s consider the couple’s life together so far.

After their meet-cute (well, meet-brood, thanks to Spencer’s tortured past), the pair had one heck of a whirlwind courtship. In addition to surviving big game attacks in Africa and a literal shipwreck in international waters, they enjoyed a clothing-optional respite on a secluded beach. Their unexpected parting in the Season 1 finale came after Spencer accidentally pitched Alex’s former fiancé over the rail of their London-bound cruise ship. (We know that sounds weird; get the full context here.) Spencer was put off the boat near Marseille, France; Alex, who couldn’t produce any paperwork to back her claim that she as his wife, was forced to stay.
So when the series returns to Paramount+ on Sunday, Feb. 23, the lovers are simultaneously trying to get back together and trying to make their way to Montana, where Spencer’s family sorely needs him.
Like we said: Rough time for the stork to visit, right?
We put the baby question to both Julia Schlaepfer, who plays Alex, and Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer. Aware of their likely reluctance to reveal spoilers, we still pressed on; read below for what they shared with TVLine in separate interviews.
TVLINE | Julia, I’m going to ask you a question you can’t answer. So, Alex was super, I’ll say “seasick” when she was on the boat, right? [Schlaepfer starts laughing] I mean, a woman on TV doesn’t normally throw up unless there’s something going on. I’m wondering, might the “seasickness” endure, even after she gets off the boat?
JULIA SCHLAEPFER | Listen, Alex and Spencer went through a lot in Season 1. She’s been through it.
TVLINE | Yeah, Alex and Spencer also had a lot of no-birth-control sex in Season 1.
SCHLAEPFER | [Laughs, takes a long pause] I can’t say where that sickness comes from or if, you know, I even found out what that sickness is from. But I do believe them being on so many ships, and so many shipwrecks, I would imagine she’s feeling pretty unwell.
TVLINE | Brandon, if Spencer were to learn that Alex was carrying his baby, how do you think he’d greet that news? Would it be another thing for him to worry about? Or might it be a hopeful moment in an otherwise tough time?
BRANDON SKLENAR | I think that he would. It would motivate him, you know? He’s really on a path of wanting to have a life with her and have her at the ranch, and he definitely has to have children one day —because he has purpose, and he has something to live for, and he’s just really hooked into that purpose, you know? So, anything that would further fuel that, I think he’d be fully accepting and embracing of it.
Now it’s your turn! What are your thoughts on Alex and Spencer as future Mom and Dad? Hit the comments, and let us know!
