Overall, it's been a great year for entertainment but TV especially. A number of amazing shows made their triumphant returns to our screens, including some that reached their end.
Several solid series' made their debuts this year, leaving us wanting more. For example, Shōgun became one of the best series of this decade, and its acclaim among fans and critics was appropriately reflected at award shows.

Below are 17 shows that debuted this year that deserve a second season. Some of them are already confirmed for a second season. While others... fingers crossed.
1. Supacell
Rapman's Supacell was easily one of my favorite shows of the year. Its unique take on the superhero genre that raises awareness about life with sickle cell, plus its amazing cast and a stellar plot, made it a must-watch . However, with the way things left off, we're in desperate need of a second season, and fortunately, it's confirmed that it's underway.
Netflix 2. X-Men '97
With a healthy dose of nostalgia for the 90s babies, Marvel over delivered with X-Men '97 . The show continues where X-Men : The Animated Series left off, modernizing a classic with impeccable animation and writing. It struck a perfect balance of staying true to its roots and bringing something fresh to the table. Not only is there a second season in the works but Disney also renewed the series for a third season, too!
Disney+/Marvel 3. Shōgun
In terms of stellar debuts in 2024, Shōgun has undoubtedly earned its rightful praise, including its big win at the Emmy s. Thanks to its initial response, FX and Hulu planned not only a second but a third season, which was in early development after the show debuted, per Deadline .
FX 4. Criminal Record
With Apple TV+ racking up some solid series under its belt, Criminal Record was one of its best series that debuted this year. The thriller follows the story of a veteran and rookie detective investigating a murder case with Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo in leading roles. It got renewed for a second season in August.
Apple TV+ 5. The Penguin
Okay, I know, this was meant to be a standalone miniseries to hold us over until Batman 2. However, with the reception, it feels like there could be some wiggle room for a second season. Fortunately, it doesn't seem like it's off the table, either, as Colin Farell told THR, "If there’s a great idea [for season two], and the writing was really muscular and as strong or stronger on the page than it was the first season, of course I would do it." Showrunner Lauren LeFranc hasn't ruled out another season, either. "I mean, we put it all out on the table. I think that in order to do a second season, we have to feel like we can top ourselves. We have to feel like there's something more there to really dig into. I mean, I really care about all these characters, even if they're terrible people," LeFranc said .
HBO 6. Matlock
Another show that has been revamped from the past, Matlock brings a fresh new twist to the Andy Griffith-starring original. This time, Kathy Bates takes on the leading role, and with anything that she does, you know it's solid. The debut season earned praise across the board, and even before it concluded, CBS renewed it for another season.
CBS 7. Fallout
Another solid Prime gem, Fallout brought the video game franchise to a new dimension in this live-action adaptation. Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Walton Goggins crush it in their respective roles, and the plot captures you immediately. Fortunately, Variety reports that it has been renewed for a second season.
Prime 8. Sunny
Rashida Jones never really misses when it comes to mildly obscure, dark comedy. With a bit of futuristic sci-fi and Jones's comedic timing, Sunny stood as one of Apple TV+'s great debuts this year. Unfortunately, the series was canceled entirely, so it doesn't seem like a second season is in the cards. But if the TV Gods are reading this, we really do need some closure after that cliffhanger of an ending.
Apple TV+ 9. How To Die Alone
Hulu's comedy series might be one of the most underrated offerings of the year. How To Die Alone, starring Natasha Rothwell as Mel, brings humor, drama, and a lot of reliability for a solid watch. It has yet to get renewed for a second season, though.
Hulu 10. My Lady Jane
At this point, it's unclear what the future holds for the show, but it definitely has a solid fanbase that wasn't pleased with Amazon's decision to cancel after one season. A reimagining of Lady Jane Grey's story received applause from George R.R. Martin, who, according to People , shared a petition to renew the series for another season.
Prime 11. Nobody Wants This
Netflix had a few gems this year, including the debut of Nobody Wants This . A quirky romcom starring 2000s TV mainstays, Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, this series explores the dynamics of interfaith relationships in the dating scene. Fortunately, the streaming giant has ordered a second season.
Netflix 12. Hysteria!
Another underrated gem that debuted this year, Hysteria! explores Satanic Panic in the 80s through the lens of a trio of outcasts in a struggling metal band who opt to capitalize on the fear as a means to get more exposure. Things take a turn once they become the target in the city. It's equal parts spooky and funny, making for an excellent marathon-watch. Unfortunately, no news of a second season has emerged... yet.
Peacock 13. Fantasmas
From the mind of former Saturday Night Live writer Julio Torres, Fantasmas brought eye-popping visuals, surreal comedy with sketch comedy tendencies, and an array of guest stars for its debut season. It's another hilarious series that debuted this year that definitely deserves a second season.
HBO 14. Creature Commandos
With James Gunn at the helm, Creature Commandos marks the first television series in the DCU and the inaugural entry in DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Though it only kicked off recently, everything from the animation to storytelling is masterful. Sure, a lot can change in the weeks to come but for now, I definitely hope to see a second season of this.
HBO Max/DC 15. English Teacher
FX's stellar run this year continued with the sitcom English Teacher . The eight-episode season left me longing for more as it delved into classroom shenanigans, personal relationships, and more. Unfortunately, we've yet to hear FX announce a renewal, but the show's creator, Brian Jordan Alvarez, told Decider that he's pushing for more seasons. Fingers crossed.
FX 16. Dead Boy Detectives
Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives brought a refreshing twist to the supernatural genre. Unfortunately, it appears that the DC comic book-based show won't be returning for a second season, per Variety , even though it really delivered on all fronts –writing, casting, visuals etc. Dead Boy Detectives was definitely an underrated gem of 2024. I hope it finds a way to continue.
Netflix 17. Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew
Okay, so it might be a tad premature to call for a second season, considering the first two episodes only debuted recently, but man, The Skeleton Crew is an awesome entry into the Star Wars universe. It's both familiar and refreshing, and hopefully, it will result in a second season.
