Their plans being kept strictly hush-hush, and are reportedly going to be a far cry from his 400-guest African-themed 21st Birthday in 2003.

"He has a very close, very loyal circle of friends and chances are he’ll be celebrating with them and they’ll be keeping tight lipped," US ABC News royal contributor Victoria Arbiter reported.

"He’s turning 30, different things matter, different things are important."

The eldest son of Prince Charles will celebrate the occasion in a private fashion at his home in north Wales, a St James's Palace spokesman saying "he'll be spending it in a low-key, private fashion".

A source said: "Most couples wouldn't think a picture of a loved one would be a great present, but this is a big deal.

William's father, Prince Charles, is thought to be paying for the present, and the duchess is said to have plenty more gifts "up her sleeve" for her husband's birthday.
