The two met in their 20s but reconnected after Yvette's mother passed in 2021. They got engaged during a trip to Yvette's hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, where her former high school had named an auditorium after her.

"I had no nerves when it came to marrying this man," Yvette told People. "He is the one for me. Absolutely."

The ceremony was "intimate, classy and fun" and had a number of Yvette's former Community costars in attendance (including Joel McHale and Ken Jeong). She wore a mermaid Ines Di Santo gown, though she recalled that the first time she saw herself in a wedding dress was actually when filming an episode of Drake & Josh.

"I cried when I saw myself in the wedding dress, and the wardrobe woman thought I was crying because I looked so beautiful," she continued. "First of all, I'm not that kind of chick to cry because I look beautiful…I was crying because I was like, 'This may be the only time I'm in a wedding dress.' And to realize that all these years later I was wrong and that I get to have my bridal moment as well, and my happy ending as well, it's amazing."

On getting married for the first time at 53, Yvette wanted to remind readers that "it's never too late." Thanking God for blessing her, she continued, "I'm not someone who really likes a lot of attention, and I realized there's a way that I could have a wedding where I made it more about other people, in the sense that because I am of a certain age and I never thought it would happen for me, my wedding can be an inspirational moment."

"When someone is right for you, when someone is into you, when someone likes you, they're coming for you in the way where you feel secure, you have peace about it," she continued. "Wait until you feel that peace. Wait until there's no chaos and confusion."
