What Are the "Winter Uglies"? TikToker Alix Earle Has a Beauty Routine for That
Her four-step process is so simple.
It might be the most wonderful time filled with gorgeous holiday lights and pristine snowy white landscapes. But let's be real—the winter can be tough on confidence. Many of us—myself included—suffer from a pale complexion, dry skin, dull hair, and hyperpigmentation. Personlly, my veins, extremities, and acne scars look like they belong to a corpse in the colder months, making me feel drab in comparison to the twinkling Christmas decorations that surround me. If you don't suffer from those insecurities, then this article is not for you. Congratulations!
While "winter uglies" may feel like a fate that we have no choice but to accept, influencer Alix Earle is sharing her secret to combating the cold weather beauty slump with a simple four-step process that is both super easy and affordable.
"We're going to have a glow-up today because, I don't know, I'm having the winter ugs right now, so we gotta pull it together," Earle said in a TikTok video posted earlier this month. When her boyfriend, Braxton Berrios, chuckles from the driver's seat of the car, Earle explains the definition of the "winter uglies."
"The winter uglies," she says, to which he responds, "Is that a thing?"
"It's a thing, and I have it," she confirms. "I mean I'm the color of this gray sweatsuit right now."
In the next shot, Earle films her forearm and shares that she is applying a self tanner. Then, she shows off her subtle glow in a red velour jumpsuit. "I self-tanned, and you can't already tell me that something just happened," she continued. "Like, you self-tan, and you are just a better person."
The next step in her winter uglies cure involves treating herself to a manicure. "I just got my nails done. I was supposed to get tips, but I was late because I was self-tanning. So, they said, 'No time for that,' but I feel like these are fresh and clean, and my hands are starting to turn orange," she added.
When it comes to hair, Earle's trick doesn't involve any expensive treatments or foil sessions. She explained that when her hair turns yellow, she reaches for a purple shampoo. "Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel like a different person."
Earle then styled her hair, applied her makeup, and got dressed off-camera, before filming the final look. "Guys, boom! This is not the same person that started this video. We have completely shape-shifted, I don't know who this is, but someone else took over. We clipped in some extensions, we have a self tan—life is good again!"
"We got rid of the winter uglies. Goodbye!" she exclaimed, before ending with, "It's time to party. Let's go have a drink."
Cheers to beating the winter uglies, Alix!
