Yahoo Lifestyle 'Wheel of Fortune' Fans Are "Gasping" Over This Contestant's $1 Million Mistake
It's not every day someone is playing for $1 million on Wheel of Fortune. But on a recent episode, one contestant had the chance... only for it to end in disappointment.
On the September 16 episode of the hit game show, viewers watched contestant Vivian Tran as she vied to win the top prize in the Bonus Round. Folks witnessed her stand alongside new host Ryan Seacrest, whose "heart [was] racing" as he up until that point hadn't experienced a competitor try to win $1 million. With the puzzle category being "What Are You Doing?," Vivian guessed the letters "C, H, M, I and P" to try and fill in the blanks. As the prompt on the puzzle board later read "_ _ _ E R I N G S _ M E HELP," Vivian tried to guess what the potential phrase could be.
"Wondering some help?" Vivian guessed in a clip posted to Wheel of Fortune's Instagram. "Answering some help? Finding some help? Looking around for some help? Boundary for help?"
Unfortunately for her, the full sentence for the puzzle was "Offering some help." While Vivian was initially frustrated for her not knowing the correct answer, Ryan unfortunately made it worse. He opened the envelope revealing what she could've won if she got it right... and it was none other than a $1 million prize.
Upon seeing Vivian's Wheel of Fortune guessing mistake, fans were in shock over what happened — and their hearts went out to her in the comments.
"I literally gasped when Ryan revealed that she had the Million. 😮," one person wrote. "I know how hard it is up there… enjoy what you did solve!! You made it on the show… that's an accomplishment right there!!!" another penned. "Omg I wanted to cry for her!! We were yelling the answer too!!!" a different viewer added.
Although Vivian's trajectory on Wheel of Fortune didn't pan out the way she hoped, there was one silver lining to it all. She still won a total of $27,300, even though she lost out on taking home a huge sum of money.
"It turned out great, a little bit painful, but I'm grateful for the opportunity," she told Maggie Sajak in another video posted on Instagram. "I knew the last two words … but the first one … I couldn't get the syllables. It was 10 seconds, so by the time it got to the eighth second, I was like, 'Ugh,' and I missed it."
