’70s Rock Musician Reveals Cancer Diagnosis, Cancels Shows
Ronnie Platt is opening up about his recent cancer diagnosis.
The Kansas frontman addressed his health in a recent social media post, following an influx of concern worsened by the band's decisions to either reschedule or cancel a handful shows previously scheduled for this month and next.
"For all of you asking," Platt, who turns 63 later this month, began in his Feb. 15 Facebook post. "Tuesday I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer." Attempting to make light of the recent health hardship, Platt joked, "But before everyone gets all excited it has a 99% survival rate, it has not spread."
"It’s contained to my thyroid," he reiterated, explaining that the prognosis is looking pretty good and that he just has to have his thyroid removed, "Go through some rehab time and be right back in the saddle."
"I sincerely appreciate everyone’s positive thoughts and prayers," he added, gushing over the "absolutely amazing people going to bat for me!!"
"As it has been put to me, this is just a bump in the road and will be behind me very soon!" Platt continued, "so everyone please CARRY ON."
The rocker's announcement is the biggest update fans have received amid an ongoing series of canceled and rescheduled concerts.
"Due to band illness and doctor advisement, the upcoming KANSAS show on Friday, February 14, 2025, in Catoosa, OK is rescheduled to Friday, November 21, 2025. The upcoming KANSAS show on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in Durant, OK is rescheduled to Saturday, November 22, 2025," the group announced on their Instagram page on Feb. 12. "The band apologizes for the inconvenience and hopes to be back on the road soon."
Then a few days later, on Tuesday of this week, Kansas made another announcement, this time canceling an upcoming show.
"Due to band illness and doctor advisement, the upcoming KANSAS show on Saturday, March 1, 2025, in Lake Charles, LA has been cancelled," the band wrote in a Feb. 18 statement. "The band apologizes for the inconvenience and hopes to be back on the road soon. All tickets will be refunded at point of purchase."
