A group of bridesmaids have been roasted on social media for their matching crimson red jumpsuits, prompting many to draw comparisons with the scarlet robes worn by the female sex slaves in the dystopic TV series, Handmaids Tale.

A photo of the women posing in their identical outfits - right down to their wavy hairstyles and tan platform sandals - was shared on Facebook and quickly caused a stir.

Several users took to the comments in the private group to remark upon the uncanny similarities between the bridesmaids and the handmaids in the popular Hulu show, which is based on Margaret Attwood's 1985 novel of the same name.

“Handmaid’s Chic,” commented one while another added, “They all look like a cult”.

Gilead aside, others took issue with the jumpsuits themselves, branding them ‘poorly fitting’ and ‘not flattering’.

“I hate this look,” stated one Facebook user.

“The only thing worse than jumpsuits is CROPPED jumpsuits,” added another.

“Is the theme pajama party?” joked one.

Kiss the Ofgroom

It’s not the first time a bride and groom have copped a grilling for their Handmaids Tale-themed nuptials.

Earlier this year, a Canadian couple was blasted for posing for a kiss in front of Gilead’s infamous ‘hanging wall’ where handmaids are executed for breaking the law.

The wedding shoot was branded as “tone-deaf” and the “new plantation wedding” but the photographer behind the controversial image defended the snap, saying that it’s intended to “wake people up” about the “oppression” the handmaids face.

The photographer confirmed to Yahoo Lifestyle that the red-robed “handmaids” flanking the newlyweds were Photoshopped into the image later, and were not actual bridesmaids as some internet critics had speculated.

Back in June, Bachelor fans spotted “a Handmaids Tale vibe” in a promo that showed astrophysicist Matt Agnew surrounded by a group of silent women dressed all in red.

Kylie Jenner left fans “disturbed” when she threw a Handmaids Tale–themed birthday party for her BFF Anastasia ‘Stassie’ Karanikolaou that saw the pair don the character’s red robes and white cap.

And in 2018, a costume company was forced to remove their ‘sexy Handmaids Tale’ Halloween outfit after online backlash.
